Bearded country star Chris Stapleton and his incredible debut Traveller dominated at the CMAs last year and picked up a couple of Grammys in February, and tonight, he won big at the Academy Of Country Music Awards too. The mountain man took home four trophies for Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Male Vocalist Of The Year, and New Male Vocalist Of The Year, and, as The Tennessean reports, a good portion of the show’s opening monologue revolved around everyone trying to take credit for his success.

Co-hosts Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley started things off, with Bryan proclaiming “He’s become a huge superstar, which means everyone in Nashville is trying to take credit for his success” before Bentley chimed in with “That’s ridiculous, everybody knows it’s me. I’m the reason why Chris is here. Back in 2014, you were on my record Riser, so buddy, great to see your success, you’re welcome.” Then Jason Aldean joined in from the audience, saying, “I was a fan of him before he had the beard, and was playing in a rock ‘n’ roll band.” Then came Thomas Rhett: “I felt I gave Stapleton the boost he needed when I cut his song called ‘Crash And Burn.’ Not only as a superstar, but financially. You’re welcome, buddy. I love you.” Then Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum: “I’m literally about to sing a song that Chris Stapleton co-wrote tonight called ‘Lonely Girl’ on this very stage.” Then Carrie Underwood came out with a retro-looking t-shirt emblazoned with Stapleton’s name and said, “I bought this Chris Stapleton T-shirt back in 1978. So I’ve basically been a walking billboard for him.” “Chris was born in 1978,” Bentley pointed out, to which Underwood replied, “Exactly. You’re welcome, Chris.” Finally, Bryan asked if there was “Anybody (else) out there that wants to take credit for Chris Stapleton? If you do, stand up!” Cue the entire room standing up.

Who does Chris Stapleton thank for his success? Justin Timberlake, with whom the country star performed a duet at the CMAs. “He helped shine a light, and the CMAs helped shine a light, and the ACMs will help shine a light, and the more lights that are shining, the better it is for me,” Stapleton told The Tennessean. “I’m grateful. It’s an unbelievable conglomerate of things that have made the stars line up.”
