When DJ Shadow announced The Mountain Will Fall last week, his first proper full-length since 2011’s The Less You Know, The Better, there was mention of a Run The Jewels feature that probably caught more than a few eyes immediately. It was a good move to kick things off with the title track as the DJ and producer has set his sights on toppling his seminal classic Endtroducing two decades after it dropped. It seemed we would have to wait a while for the RTJ collab, “Nobody Speak,” to surface, but it’s the first followup!
Shadow’s in tip-top shape on this track. Triumphant horns, slapping drums, an infectious, and a soulful chicken grease chord sample mingle with some El-P-esque digital blip and synth-work, providing the perfect platter for the jewel runners to serve vivid, tongue twisting bars. El-P kicks things off and Killer Kill comes in to shut it down per usual. RTJ can seemingly spit over everything, but Shadow’s electro/jazz/hip-hop hybrid beat noticeably accentuates the rhymes. I may have to give The Mountain Will Fall a more scrupulous look than expected. The first two forays have me thinking there is a bit of truth in the title. Check it out.
The Mountain Will Fall is out 6/24 via Mass Appeal. Pre-order is available here.
