Smino – “Menu”

Smino – “Menu”

St. Louis rapper Smino might be the best hope to put the city back on the map after Nelly, and Nelly has been out-rapped by the Honey Nut Cheerios Honey Bee, so things are looking bleak for the Midwest hub. Smino came with a decent buzz catalyst in the blkjuptr EP last year, mixing Southern trap sensibilities and Midwestern pride much like his city, which can technically fit both classifications. On his latest loosie, “Menu,” Smino leans R&B with bouncy digital blips and trappy 808s to interject. He switches speeds and cadences while delivering playful wordplay incorporating rhymes about Adam Sandler and Jolly Ranchers to show how he appreciates his woman and what awaits her in the privacy of their bedroom. The contrasting mix of playful but explicit lyrics and the buoyant beat anchored in trap bass is pleasantly contradictory and insanely catchy. Listen.

blkjuptr is out now.
