The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

This past weekend was the Eurovision Song Contest, a long-running continental tradition that uses lights and fog and goofy-ass elaborate productions in a quest to determine, I guess, the best song in Europe? I’m not exactly sure what you’re supposed to win if you win. But I will say that the winner, Ukrainian representative Jamala, knows how to sell a UK garage song about Stalin-era brutalities, and that the Hunger Games visuals are a big part of that:

But that performance isn’t a music video, so it’s not eligible for this week’s list. Instead, this week’s five winners are below.

5. Twin Peaks – “Butterfly” (Dir. Ezra Ewen)

At the beginning, this is a pretty effective band-walks-through-cemetery-looking-cool video. And when it becomes something else, it gets better.

4. Nite Jewel – “Kiss The Screen” (Dir. Delaney Bishop)

All of our fantasy lives should be this rich and rewarding.

3. Coldplay – “Up&Up” (Dir. Vania Heymann & Gal Muggia )

90% of this video is lovely juxtapositional trippiness, but that image of a continent-sized Chris Martin is going to haunt my nightmares for a minute.

2. Turnstile – “Addicted” (Dir. Elliot Bech)

The piece of chicken in this video looks pretty much disgusting, as does everything else in this video. And yet, I suddenly have an overwhelming desire to go get Popeye’s for lunch. Also: Shout out to Elliot Bech for doing hand-drawn animation and making it look amazing.

1. Mykki Blanco – “High School Never Ends” (Feat. Woodkid) (Dir. Matt Lambert)

If every generation gets the Romeo & Juliet it deserves, this generation must be doing things right.
