Goblin Cock – “Something Haunted”

Goblin Cock – “Something Haunted”

Pinback’s Rob Crow both quit and then subsequently unquit music last year, before almost immediately returning to releasing new music at his usual rapid rate. He put out the debut album from Rob Crowe’s Gloomy Place back in March and is now revisiting one of his many side projects, Goblin Cock, for the release of their third studio LP Necronomindonkeykongimicon this fall. If it’s not already clear, Crow excels at naming things.

Even aside from their moniker, Goblin Cock is one of Rob Crow’s more rewarding endeavors. The band plays sweaty stoner rock like they’re trapped inside a bag of Doritos caught on fire. Where Pinback is insular and the Gloomy Place taut, Goblin Cock keep things a bit more playful. Check out their outrageous video for 2009’s “We’ve Got A Bleeder” or the “fuck shit and fuckin’ fuck you” moment on “Something Haunted,” the band’s first single in six years. Opening with some classic doom metal sludge, “Something Haunted” soon begins to unfold into a spacier drone as Crow (or as he’s known by his Goblin Cock alter-ego, Lord Phallus) lets out a controlled wail about how “the children won’t know peace in our times.” It’s a stern admonishing with fingers clearly assigning blame, and it makes it clear that in spite of their sense of humor, Goblin Cock are to be taken seriously.
