The Bad Plus – “The Beautiful Ones” (Prince Cover)

Longtime jazz trio the Bad Plus first rose to fame with covers of artists like Aphex Twin, Blondie, and Radiohead, and now, after several years of focusing mostly on original music, they’re back in the reinterpretation game. Their newly announced LP It’s Hard features covers of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps,” TV On The Radio’s “Staring At The Sun,” and more, and the first cut they’ve shared from the album is a rhythmically inventive reimagining of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones.” “It has a great melody, interesting changes and clear sections. And it’s dramatic,” bassist Reid Anderson tells The Wall Street Journal. “It’s undeniably pop music, but it’s also a little strange. It kind of sums up Prince’s appeal in that way.” Listen below.
