VH1 Classic Rebrands As MTV Classic

We’ve been hearing about ’90s nostalgia for years now, so it’s about time MTV capitalized on it. This Monday, 8/1, on the 35th anniversary of MTV’s original launch date, Viacom is rebranding VH1 Classic as MTV Classic, a network on which they will endlessly recycle old MTV programming. As a pop culture fan in my early thirties, I feel deeply pandered to, and frankly I am totally OK with that. Plunge backward into adolescence with me, won’t you?

The first day’s schedule provides a sense of what MTV Classic will be like. It kicks off at noon with MTV’s first ever hour of programming, MTV Hour One, followed by the Total Request Live retrospective The TRL Decade and then a marathon of notable MTV Unplugged episodes including Bob Dylan, Alice In Chains, Erykah Badu, Oasis, Neil Young, and, of course, Nirvana. The night wraps up with an animated programming block including Daria, Beavis & Butt-head and Aeon Flux.

Although anything from MTV’s history is fair game, allegedly MTV Classic will focus on the ’90s and early 2000s. Primetime programming blocks (10PM to 1AM, Monday through Thursday) will feature series including Daria, Beavis & Butt-head, Aeon Flux, Run’s House, Pimp My Ride, Cribs, Jackass, Punk’d, Wonder Showzen, and Clone High. Series like Unplugged and Storytellers will air on Friday nights, while the likes of Laguna Beach and The Real World will air on weekends. Per the press release, “Additionally, MTV Classic will continue to run movies, concerts, and music videos from the past that speak to the last three decades of music.”

This is all well and good, but what about Sifl And Olly? Watch the MTV Classic trailer below.
