Uni Ika Ai – “Soft In Ice” Video

Brooklyn-based dream-pop quartet Uni Ika Ai make a rhythmic, wonderfully askew brand of ethereal pop. They’re set to drop their debut full-length Keeping A Golden Bullseye In The Corner of My Mind this fall. The second foray we receive into the album is “Soft In Ice,” along with a set of visuals. It’s a slow-churning heavy-hitter with Maia Friedman’s sultry, breathy tone floating over a deep-burrowing bass line, knocking drums, and playful digital synth blips. The accompanying clip is a deft black-and-white play of light and shadow from director Patrick Stephenson. Distorted, glitch-y effects with white noise are mixed in with warped monochrome images before we clearly see Friedman passionately delivering her lyrics for the powerful crescendo on the last hook. It has a dark, moody feel thanks to the ambience the Freedlyville Quarry, the US’ oldest quarry, provided. Watch.
