Mick Jenkins – “Drowning” (Feat. BADBADNOTGOOD) Video

Chicago up-and-comer Mick Jenkins announced his album The Healing Component a little over a week ago in tandem with the smooth lead single “Spread Love.” Today, we get more details on the album — which features NoName, theMIND, BADBADNOTGOOD, and production from Kaytranada and THEMpeople — along with a more serious tone from Jenkins on the video for the BADBADNOTGOOD-assisted single “Drowning.”

“Drowning” is an evocative bit of introspection from Jenkins, and the accompanying clip, directed by Nathan Smith, is fittingly somber yet uplifting. The Chicago MC is the center of a chilling slave narrative in which he is left to drown but manages to struggle to freedom. Jenkins joked about the creation of the song: “I introduced the idea of covering TheSenseiBlue’s ‘On The Map,’ a viral hit from YouTube and the subsequent laughs and enjoyment ensued. It was the inspiration for ‘Drowning.'” But what results is truly moving. Watch.
