CRX – “Broken Bones”

The Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi’s new side project CRX are gearing up to drop New Skin at the end of the month. We’ve already heard the lead single, “Ways To Fake It,” and saw the band make their TV debut playing the song on Kimmel. Today we get the followup, “Broken Bones,” and it hints at one hell of an album coming at us in a little over a week.

Huge, slow, hypnotic power chords, deep-burrowing bass grumble, and dense drums careen into controlled calamity with cymbal bashes and rising electric guitar swelling underneath some slyly piercing songwriting. Valensi sings of a hurt that feels as bewildering and debilitating as living with a shattered skeleton underneath your skin. He sings “Taking my time running in place/ Leaving the house was a mistake” just before the monster hook hits. New Skin is looking good. Listen.

New Skin is out on 10/28 via Columbia.
