Paramount Pictures has acquired the rights to adapt Peter Guralnick’s book Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘N’ Roll for the big screen with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role as Sam Phillips. Phillips was the pioneering music producer behind the small Memphis-based Sun Records, which recorded artists like Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, Howlin’ Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins. Along with Phil Chess of Chess Records (R.I.P.), Phillips, as the title of Guralnick’s book suggests, is credited as one of the most influential figures of early rock ‘n’ roll.

DiCaprio will also have a producer’s credit on the film along with Mick Jagger, Victoria Pearman, Steve Bing, Ian Montone, Rick Yorn and of course Guralnick. Hopefully Jagger doesn’t bring his residual stink from his time working on HBO’s Vinyl. There is no director or writer attached to the project as of yet.
