Jay Som – “The Bus Song”

Jay Som – “The Bus Song”

Jay Som is the project of Melina Duterte. She’s been putting out music since 2012, and last month, Polyvinyl Records reissued Turn Into, a collection of demos from 2015 that demonstrated the San Francisco-based musician’s immense talent. In March, Jay Som will put out its first proper full-length — it’s called Everybody Works, and lead single “The Bus Song” makes good on the promise of Duterte’s early work. The song starts off with a mumbled intimacy that recalls Now, Now before blossoming into a satisfying interlocking rhythm that carries through to the rest of the track. Duterte positions herself as the one who stays, urging a third party to “take time to figure it out.” “And I just want you to need me/ And I just want you to lead me,” she coos on the hook. It’s a desperate sort of affection, and the track is pillowy enough to withstand whatever blows that devotion entails. Listen via NPR below.
