I don’t understand what it means to be “running” rap. Drake will probably always be more popular than Kendrick, or at least some other pop rapper will. Kendrick will always be better. The notion of competition between them makes no sense to me because they are in different lanes. Apples to oranges. Why is this a thing in rap? It sounds ridiculous in any other genre. No one talks about whether Radiohead or Coldplay dominates rock because they’re competing in different metrics. There was a time when Kanye was both the most popular and most critically acclaimed but that’s rare.

This is different. Kendrick is an artist that really can’t be ignored. If you like hip hop, hell if you like music in general, you are paying attention to Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick Lamar is not Remy Ma. He’s a multiplatinum artist who released the defining album of the decade. Drake is fun, Drake is a good time, but Drake is not an important artist in the way that Kendrick is.

That being said, if they actually went toe to toe, it would be a stalemate that lead to both sides losing fans. Drake’s entire career is a meme; every embarrassing thing he does endears him to his fans. He couldn’t outrap Kendrick in a million years, but that wouldn’t really matter. Drake wouldn’t lose the beef, but he sure as hell wouldn’t win either.

It’s almost like they’re human beings capable of empathy and compassion despite making music that isn’t critically well received and hip.

Almost invariably in every tough breakup there is somebody that carries themselves with class and dignity and another person like Dave.

This was incredibly diplomatic and charitable towards David Longstreth, considering some of the fairly personal and downright mean lyrics he clearly wrote about her.

To be clear, my entire editing process for ALL stories basically consists of, “Did you mention CRJ? If not, please justify this bizarre and unsavory choice.”

this whole album rollout and every fucking headline and interview i’ve read here and on the other sites has been even more obnoxious and painful than the music itself which is saying something
