Absolutely Free – “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” (Frankie Valli Cover)

The first artist to record Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio’s “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine (Anymore)” was Frankie Valli, for whom it was the first solo single in a decade after a string of hits with the Four Seasons. Valli’s 1965 single didn’t make much of an impression, though, especially compared to how the Walker Brothers fared with the same song the following year: The newly titled “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” ended up becoming the biggest hit of the Walkers’ career, topping the UK singles chart and climbing to #13 in the US. Countless other covers have emerged over the decades, including well-known versions by Cher, Neil Diamond, and Keane. And in honor of the solar eclipse that will slice across North America today, Toronto “astro-beat” combo Absolutely Free have taken a crack at “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” as well. Hear their stately yet psychedelic interpretation of the tune below, and make sure not to stare directly at the sun.

Purchase “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” at Bandcamp digitally or as a limited edition lathe-cut 7″ picture disc. A press release explains, “Proceeds will be donated to Earthjustice, a non-profit environmental law organization that protects natural resources and promotes healthy communities.”
