Via WFMU’s Beware of the Blog: Sir Elton John, Roger Daltrey, and Robert Plant are going to “cover” the Buzzcocks’ song, “Ever Fallen in Love” to remind everyone that they’re still alive and John Peel’s not:
The single will be first played simultaneously across all BBC radio stations on 10 October.It will be released on 21 November, with proceeds going to the Amnesty International charity.
It goes on to say that the video will be shown on the BBC October 13th…will they archive it online or can somebody rip it? I really want to see Robert Plant ruin this. The Futureheads are supposed to make an appearance, but I’m not sure if they’ll just be rocking in the background or covering another song.

Between this and “Why Can’t I Touch It?” being used in a Nissan commercial, Pete Shelley would be rolling over in his grave, were he dead. At least he gets some cash from the commercial. But how much damage must it do to his soul, to hear these men participate in the ravaging of one of the greatest songs of the rock era?
Or am I over-reacting?

Zombies’ Colin Blunstone currently ranks above Plant in the Great Rock Voice category. But I wouldn’t want to hear him cover a Buzzcocks song either.

For the commercial, probably (depending on who owns the rights). For the cover, not necessarily.
You’re allowed to cover any song you want, with or without the songwriter’s permission. There’s something called a compulsory license that allows you to cover a song, with or without permission, so long as you pay the necessary royalties.
When you hear about bands “obtaining permission”, it’s because the band’s label refused to allow them to release the cover if the label had to pay the full royalty rate for the song. (Bands/labels usually try to negotiate a lower rate with the rightsholder, as they feel the compulsory rate is too expensive.)
Technically, as long as they pay Pete royalties, they can cover the song with or without his permission.
That’s a nice clarification. Sort of a tacit permission, after the fact.
to all you people bitching that robert plant has a “great” voice… have you heard anything he’s done from about unledded on? he sounds like ass. surely, zep songs have great vocals, but zep is long dead.
Fuck you, Nate. Mighty Rearranger is fantastic, he still sounds awesome even live. Robert Plant will never fuck anything up. You’re the one who sounds like an ass.

Well! What a converstion! I would like to see both Robert Plant AND Roger Daltrey sing together – but, alas, it will only be on the radio – and in Britain! Led Zep – dead? Immortalality? Robert – a God? What has this all come to? Personally I think Robert and Jimmy and ‘what’s his name’ could make quite BIG BUCKS if they toured as Led Zepplin – why does he think he needs to be a boy again to be Led Zepplin again? Portishead is doing great as his band. Where did they get the name? Strange Sensations? There isn’t a name better than Led Zepllin for a rock band – even if he is pushing 60! Maybe it is all of those nude photos everyone is selling on ebay… yes, it is undignifies, but he is a beautiful man – inside and out – and we are grateful that he has shared so much of himself with us!!! He makes me happy and I like being happy.
