Love this clip and that Loose Fur don’t take themselves too seriously, even though Born Again In The USA is a serious contender for my favorite alt-country disc of the year so far. More song-y than the group’s last, which I found uneven. The band members don’t appear in this clip, but that probably worked best with Jim O’Rourke’s schedule, since he’s producing or contributing to a different album every day.

Link sent to us by reader Gary, who notes it looks like it could have been directed by Tweedy’s 11-year-old son (it’s all Japanese Power Rangers with a sweet dance off toward the end). “The monster totally gets served.”

  1. How long has this Tweedy side project been going on? What a great way to start my morning. Thanks for the lead.

  2. It’s no “Know Your Chicken.” You know what I mean?

The album’s great, but I don’t know if I’d call it alt-country. It’s got that sort of Americana grit, but it’s pretty prog in the rhythm changes and stuff. “Prog” in that loose, spare, early Yes sense, that is, not the Dream Theater or Tool sense.

In any case, it’s miiiiiles better than their debut.

Awesome video, but somehow it feels less than offical.

  5. May feel less than official, but it’s being promoted on the band’s label page and the label’s front page

The Ruling Class is currently getting a ton of plays on my pod. Opinion: the song is better than 75% of A Ghost…

  7. I’d say ‘Fox Confessor Brings The Flood’ by Neko Case is the best alt-country disc so far this year, but I’m not sure if it even is alt-country.

  8. ^^ how does that relate to the subject at hand?

I loved that. The GothLoli-Bat-girl-villain was interesting lol

  9. Love it. So far “Apostolic” is my favorite.

alt. country? wilco(or any other jeff tweedy project) hasn’t been alt. country for about ten years, if they ever were to begin with. let’s all just stop saying alt. country. it doesn’t exist. you know what alt. country is? it’s that pile of dung, garth brooks/shania twain pop in a cowboy hat crap that comes from nashville. you know that music everyone calls “country”. which is the real alternative to real country music? let’s all just start separating the talent from the non-talent. two categories: good or bad. neil young has done country records that are ridiculously better than anyone who actually calls themselves a country artist. merle haggard=good. brooks and dunn=bad. gram parsons=good. toby keith=very bad. johnny cash=good. kid rock=bad. do i need to go on? who wants to get on this train?

oh yeah, ryan. you are completely out of your skull. “a ghost is born” is a great record.

  12. Looks like the video’s composed of clips from the Super Sentai show “MagiRanger.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mah%C5%8D_Sentai_Magiranger
