    Meh.

  2. i’ve never really been a huuuuge fan, but that was pretty boring for a rhcp leadoff single.

  3. p.s. RACONTEURS!

  4. Autopsy IV  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

    I like the hook.

  5. d'oh  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

That’s the lead single off a double album???

    C’mon!

  6. I have always thought the RHCP were one of the most overrated bands of all time. Still think that. This is nothing new. bleah.

  7. Not good.

Which is too bad, because I really liked how they’d branched out on the last couple of albums. This song, though, just ain’t good. And the video is worser.

  8. adam  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

jeez. how much more middle-of-the-road can they get? after listening to that song, i had to go back and listen to ‘bloodsugarsexmagik’ in its entirety just to remind myself why i’m a fan.

  9. jimm  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

    verses=last dance with mary jane….lame

  10. “I thought they already did their California song.”

this isn’t new Phoenix! you’ve whetted my appeitite, now feed me!

  12. Evan  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

The hook is very catchy in a modern rock radio sort of way, so that’s probably why they decided to make it the first single. It’s ok, but not a great Chili Peppers song.

  13. Zach  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

It sounds like a beefed up tom petty cover.

  14. I’ve got a video & mp3 post of the “Dani California” track over here – http://culturebully.blogspot.com/2006/04/red-hot-chili-peppers-dani-california.html

  15. #1 Hater  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

Ok, y’all are some pretentious haters. That song is very good and is typical for a lead off single. I mean Scar Tissue was pretty slow and simple too and that was just a slice of what californication had to offer. Y’all need to get off the pretentious indie bands and listen to quality rock n roll. p.s. i like indie too so go shove a 2L pepsi bottle in yur ass.

  16. TheHumanComa  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

I like it, it’s catchy enough…Y’all. RHCP’s last couple of albums have be good summer time discs that you can play anywhere because they’re one of those bands that almost everyone can stand. But I’m not buying the album.

  17. setanor  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

    ps…. PHOENIX????

  18. Rafael  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

i’m not impressed at all. It’s OK, but not impressive for what their new album is supposed to be like. I’m an rhcp fan too… so i’m not just being a dick about it.

  19. todd  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

Radio-friendly first track. Kind of necessary to promote a double album in my op. Their best stuff usually isn’t one of their radio singles, in my op. Listen on to the end for the Frusciante (purple hazy) payoff.

  20. S. Jerusalem  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

It’s okay. I’ve soured on the RHCP after their more mellow, “mature” discs, but I still enjoy their crazy early songs. I like the “whacka-whacka” bass line early in this song, which is a breath of fresh air in their career.

But haven’t they already done a song where they list off a bunch of states already?

  21. Sounds just like last dance with mary jaaaane…lame

  22. Haakon  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

Isin’t this about a character, not the state?

Dani California is a character they use in alot of thier songs like in By The Way she is mentioned. “Dani the girl is singing songs to me”

So don’t bash it because “they already done a song where they list off a bunch of states already?”

  23. Mommy  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

I kinda liked the video for the Misfits section. Anthony as Danzig!

  24. frankie anchors  |   Posted on Apr 3rd, 2006

i agree with adam. i’m a fan (especially of john frusciante) but this was just really boring and bad.

  25. they really like california. a lot.

  26. chico  |   Posted on Apr 4th, 2006

blah. As a huuuge frusciante fan, I can’t help but feel disappointed. Track sounds too produced in a bland fm ‘hit’ sort of way. Their last few albums were interesting b/c they at least sounded fairly minimal, like a band playing together w/o a lot of studio tricks. I guess I’ll have to hear the rest of the album before passing too harsh or a judgement.

Could this be a repeat of JA’s Strays? A formerly great band reduced to modern rock mediocrity?

  27. janeGoodal  |   Posted on Apr 4th, 2006

the video is good actually! it reminds me of those ultra high profile videos that premiered on mtv in the 90s like: IRONIC by ALANIS or SCREAM by MJ

anyone else reminded of D-Lo when Kiedis sings “yeah yeah, yeah yeah” at the end of the chorus???

  28. delicious  |   Posted on Apr 4th, 2006

it sounds like everything they have done in the last 7 to 10 years.

(last dance with Mary Jane, anyone?)

  29. So then…what bands did you spot? Beatles, Nirvana….

  30. Nate  |   Posted on Apr 4th, 2006

Yeah I love the Chili Peppers and this blows. I hope the album is better.

    sugar ray-esque summer marketability? yeah…
when you’ve been making music for so long and everyone’s grandmother knows who you are, it’s difficult to please everyone- so you’ve gotta make a generic single that white women can bob their head to.

  34. Didn’t Morning Wood already make that video?

  35. Carter  |   Posted on Apr 4th, 2006

yawn… i liked them more when they did heroine.

  36. ive been waiting for the single… and your right David… it is meh…

  37. wikkawhut  |   Posted on Apr 4th, 2006

i like this just as much as i like kelly clarksons since you been gone(catch myself singing along, punch myself in the nose). and being a huge fan from day one i’m almost sure the album will pay off. if not i still have the archives.

  38. Sam as usual, but they are still a great band

    thanks
    http://ultra8201.blogspot.com

  39. Same as usual,sorry

  40. it’s passable until the canned alt rock distortion kicks in.

whoever invented amp farm should be horsewhipped.

  41. Veronica  |   Posted on Apr 4th, 2006

I forced myself to listen through the first 30 seconds just to get to the better part of the song, the hook. The hook was better, but nothing special.

  42. I regretfully admit to thinking RHCP were good when a HS friend copied the first LP for me in 1985. 21 years later, I find it to be the absolute worst band (that would be played on a station that I would listen to) ever. Anthony Kedis should get back on drugs, because sober is making him think he can sing. Time for a blogworldwide intervention. No more. Call your or email you local radio stations and tell them to stop playing it.

  43. Balumpus  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

don’t forget though…they could ride around in limos all day long and be more punk rock than any of us…

  44. Pete  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

Dont be so uptight. The chili peppers are a great band, and have come up with some of the most orriginal songs to date. They are so much better than the bands that are out nowadays, like keane, embrace, snow pattrol to name but a few. you know what i mean. And of course the single is a bit slow. Its a crowd pleaser. Everyone has to be able to relate to it. Just chill out.
By the way (no pun intended) i am sooooo looking forward to the new album. its gonna rock!

  45. kris  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

Yall this CD is gonna rock. Singles aren’t supposed to be the best song off the CD. But still Dani California is a great tune. And you can’t hate the video. I have not seen anything even close to this from any one, at least its original

  46. ^^ You’re kidding right?

Regardless, it’s a nice tune, pretty much built for radio, but the Peppers are a good band. I hope we’re not disappointed with the new albums.

  47. i thought it was awsome expesially the Sex Pistols Part and the Nirvana Unplugged in New York , & it’s a Good Song, Why Ya’ll gotta be so Negitive, geez respect the peppers *

  48. marigold  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

    wow…
i was so very excited for this single to come out, but now i can’t see why. the chorus sounded really cool when i heard it in clips on the internet, but the video ruins it all. the could have done something really good with the idea and everything, but then they do the same thing as the backstreet boys, which bothers me a lot. i’ll probably post this and then realize that there was some meaning to it, but right now, i think someone just went, ‘so dani california… no idea for a video… i know! let’s mock other bands’ (even though motley crue deserve mocking, no offence).
i like the chorus, i just hoped the song would be more original. i dunno… i like their crazy stuff. where did it all go?
*shrug* oh well, i hope the rest of the album is good.

  49. Ollie  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

I can’t get enough of RHCP, but that song was a tad mediocre. I did, ‘however’ like the music video, that was pretty cool. I hope we get some cracking tunes from the album in May.
    (*FINGERS CROSSED*)

  50. DangerOOZING  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

OOOOOOOOK, Chris, D’oh, Steve, & everyone else who doesnt like this song. I would like simply to say that you all are a bunch of pretentious, self-involved, egocentric, Bit*hes. However i don’t know you at all and i cant make that judgment. But i can say this, this is one of the best songs i have ever heard. Werd.

  51. gary  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

This new song kicks ass it best ive herd since otherside jst cnt believe sum of u people tht dnt like dis song. i jst cnt wait till ther album now it guna be gr8

  52. Is it the best chili peppers song ever? No, and if I said yes would any of you hesitate to slam Under the Bridge, Californication, or some other single in my face? There is one thing about new singles though from popular bands, they are always compared to either former works of the band, or to what all the other bands. In context of the band is this as good as whats on Blood, Sex, sugar, magik, no. So now tell me one POPULAR/CULTURALLY RELEVANT band that has produced an album within the past 18 months that has been groundbreaking or overshadowed any work done in the past by the band. U2… no Green day … no Dave Matthews Band… No System of a Down… No Weezer… No Coldplay… No I could go on and on. No big band with a large fan base has crafted a great album in the past 2 or 3 years, and for music as a whole it goes back to like 1999 or 2000. So compare this song not to Under the Bridge or Californication, but to what you would be listening to if this album was never made, like My Chemical Romance(sigh). Oh, and don’t throw some indie band no one’s ever heard of in my face, I have local bands near me that sound great like Led Zeppelin, but are they reeally that great if only a few hundred or thousand people know them? No, so give this single a break it’s good, at least it’s not a whiny single.

  54. It’s a pretty cool song, good lead single, not meant to be their best. I’ve heard 5 live songs that will be on the upcoming album, and DC was by far the least good, don’t worry the chilis are stronger than ever!

  55. DNagerbold  |   Posted on Apr 5th, 2006

    I quite like it…Chili Peppers are back…

But I like Pearl Jam’s new one better!

  56. Joseph  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

Ok, come on. We all know this isn’t their best song, but it’s still pretty good. Every reference to “California” is actually to Dani, (and I know someone said this earlier) so its not really a state song but a girl song. And videos are videos, there were some funny parts and although bands have done this type of thing before I think their take on it was better than the others. And really, do you really think they spend their time watching other people’s vid’s? It’s still creative.

  57. Chilin Dylan  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

Well I’m a huge fan of this band, I celebrate their entire collection of work, and Californication is probably the most important album of all time to me. I love this new song. I think it’s important to realize that every chili peppers album represents a new direction for them, especially everything since mothers milk. It’s awesome that a band that has been together for so long can continue to enjoy making music together the way they seem to. What they do comes from such a positive and deep place. Musicians like John Frusciante don’t come along very often. To me this band is something completely seprate from the rest of rock. The new album might not be another Blood Sugar, but I dont think I want it to be, I’m excited to see what their doing now, and I’m psyched for the tour, let’s hope The Mars Volta is along for the ride.

  58. jonathan  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

I can’t believe half u ppl! This song is awesome, tell me u dont like the effect into the solo/outro? Awesome. I luv the vocals kinda spoken, ya know. Sooo kool. Wot evry1 complaining about, they even gota bit of funk in the guitar during verses. Jus LISTEN. Can’t wait for Stadium Arc. to come out. An wots rong with the video. It’s too different for hald of u dimwits to handle, ey?? I think its great.
All i know is this is better than their last album wif all that shit towards the end of the album (except Venice Queen) and this new album is sooo gona b overplayed!!!!
Wot u all expect some heavy punk!?!
Get with the CHILI PEPPER times diks!
Can’t wait to see DC live, gona rock out.
    YEAH, YEAH.

  59. incredibly disappointed! what on earth happened to our beloved Chili Peppers – very very bland new song!! :(

  60. P.S. great video clip for it though :P

  61. Drew  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

Totally agree with everyone on the tom petty thing, first thing I thought of too. The song ehhh it’s okay sounds like it could be on by the way. Best part of the song is the little jam by John at the end….hopefully he’s featured on this album, john frusciante is such a great song writer, I expect a pretty solid album- We’ll see

  62. Tess  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

the rhcp’s r the best band in the world…! so i want all of u ppl who disagree to go to hell. i didnt even need to listen to the song to know that it was going to be genius… have some faith guys the album will rock!!!

  63. sian  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

i totally agree with ^^ this band is awesome and i no there album is gonna be too!!! so stop being so negative about RHCP! i think Dani California is a great song too!!

  64. Neilo  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

I wouldn’t even listen to this song because the Chili Peppers haven’t done anything remotely good since the last century. Ergo, I posit that the new album will be worse than the last album (purely because there’s more tunes on it) and everyone with no musical taste will buy it because MTV and Q Magazine tell them to. Plus, RHCP blow live. I saw them 2 years ago when the Pixies supported them in Dublin and they were so bad some guy had to get real drunk and shit himself to overcome the disappointment.

  65. McLeach  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

cool! Its not the best but there is lots good stuff coming! Arcadium will be their best album!!! Wait for the songs like Wet Sand..AMAIZING…Frusciante rules

  66. Lewis  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

iv been a pepper fan since i can remember, most of u aint gotta clue what ur sayin, the single and video are most impressive and i cant wait 4 the album 2 b released, so stop whingin and listenin 2 crap and get with the program, who’s with me then????

  67. Gugu  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

Neilo,I can bet u havn’t heard enough of RHCP or u don’t know what good music is. RHCP is the best rock band in the world.I think u would even say Backstreet Boys is better than RHCP. U really suck.

  68. Finch  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

Im a huge chilis fan and i cant believe what some of you are sayin. You obviously arent real red hot chili peppers fans and obviously arent lisnin to it LOUD ENOUGH. Bang the volume up a bit and you will love it trust me. Its probably one of the best songs they have made……..and the videos wicked!!!! SUCK MY KISS

  69. WAY TO GO FINCH, AND ALL THE OTHER CHILI DEFENDERS HERE. DANI CALI ROCKS!!! nuff said.

I can’t wait til May 9th so I can drown out the sound of you haters’ ignorance with some truly funky masterpieces.

Just look at the way there fucking leaping about there in their 40′s and with 9 albums under there hairy chins they prove that they can do what other bands cant survive!!!!!!

wow it is a great song!!!!

  77. Hey! Give ‘em some credits, it’s a great song, not their best but still good! It seems like y’all think Blood sugar is their best album.. I don’t agree with that, the two latest album rocks Blood sugar. And therefore, since their music is just getting better and better I have great expectations!
    Rock on Peppers!

  78. I meant; great expectations for their new album!

  79. For real. It’s a great song. And those of you talking about a “state” song, this is from Wikipedia “The first single will be called “Dani California”, according to Kiedis the same girl from songs By The Way (“Dani the girl”) and Californication (“Teenage bride with a baby inside”) supposedly representative of every girl he has ever known.” The song sounds like it’s about her death. And if you’re stuck on the state thing then see it as representative of the death of “California” and that may put some symbolism into the dif bands in their vid.

  80. Alex  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

Hey Y’all i first heard this and was to be fair most unimpressed, i felt it was bland and unexciting however like the works of many a great it does grow on you, i do aggree though this is not the best promotional tool. iv heard several other tracks off the album that are much stronger but this is good and is still growing on me

  81. ilove anthony  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

The red hot chili peppers are a fuckin awesome band, this songmay not be as good compared to their others, but its just that, its still a really good song, but since they were so awesome before we expect even more. A good song, not great, but THEY still are the best band ever

Everything the peppers do is perfect. It just might take you all a while to realize it. Frusciante runs the world!!

  85. John  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2006

I thought the verse was a little boring. The chorus is pretty catchy and usual for a mainstream single, and the Frusciante solo at the end is pretty rocking. I listened to some bootlegs of other tracks that will be on Stadium though such as “Ready Made,” “21st Century,” “Desecration Smile” and “Tell me Baby” and they are all a hell lot better than the single. This album will be amazing I can tell. Don’t let the single get you down, all singles are usually one of the, if not, the worst on the album so. Chilis are the best band to live and forever will be. Rock on! (By the way, go to http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/483684.html for bootlegs).

  86. Eric  |   Posted on Apr 7th, 2006

I can’t believe everyone is hating on this song. Every album sounds unique from the last and this one is sure to grow on you. Can’t wait to hear the rest of Stadium Arcadium. RHCP still rocking hard and Johnny is sounding better than ever.

  87. Vicki  |   Posted on Apr 7th, 2006

How can you people not like the song Dani California…True fans would know what I mean and would love the song…I can not stop playing the video from the website just to listen to Dani California again and again…I can not wait to listen to the new album…Go The Peppers you guys rock and have come a long way

  88. a lil peppers  |   Posted on Apr 7th, 2006

hey i didnt really like this song the first time i heard this ill admit but it grew on me and i love it now. seriously it will grow on you.

  89. Red Hot Chili Peppers have always sounded great, and they never dissapiont me, I mean when I here that it’s a song by them I can be 99% sure that I will like it!
    Ps. Aerosmith is awesome too!

  90. Soul2Squeeze  |   Posted on Apr 7th, 2006

What drugs are you people on?? This is an awesome track. Just because it isn’t Under The Bridge or Give It Away. Seriously get over it. Bands change. Those with half a brain are those who can understand and embrace these musical changes. Maybe next time you should actually take your fingers from your fuckin ears.

it might just be a coincidence, but all the really good bands that have said that their new album is the best theyve ever done, it always turns out to be the worst. it is the same for this. i listend to most of the album and all the songs are pretty much as bad as this. basically, they all sound really prentious. theyre new album is bad and i dont think they even know it.

  97. This song rocks!!!RHCP the way I like it.

  98. Leigh  |   Posted on Apr 8th, 2006

I can see there is alot of discussions about the new singel “Dani California” though being a huge chili fan myself i do like this…not a particulary strong track, though good all the same, those shouldnt judge the chilis ona single, a single is a hook, and though some now think the album will not be a sucess you have to listen to it to find out so the chilis sucedded on what they wnated to achive…get you talking about them :]

The Chilis always release a radio friendly song, and while it may be good, it is never the best or worst. And even when it is one of the best, there are always others that are just as good.

Anyway, I have also heard some songs off the new album, and I can say the songs Tell Me Baby, Desecration Smile, and especially Readymade are amazing. To tell the truth, Readymade has the potential to be one of their best ever, but I can’t quite decide if it is radio friendly at all.

I suggest if you own any of their albums and like it, get this one. It is truly sounding amazing, and Dani California is probably the worst i’ve heard so far (besides 21st Century).

Oh, and for the meaning behind the song, it is one of the most meaningful songs since Otherside IMO.

Anthony says Dani is a representation of every girl he has ever dated. The girl’s full name is Dani California. When he says “California rest in peace,” he is saying “Dani rest in peace.” I remember in an interview he said every band member fell in love around the same time, and he found himself able to express emotions he never knew he could until now.

I think he is saying goodbye to all the crazy “Dani California” girls he ever dated, and is starting to settle down. The entire song is about him settling down.
