Continuing on the classic rock theme, Mark Knopfler never gets his due. Amazing guitarist whose work since Dire Straits has been largely neglected. Granted, his recent solo releases have been uneven, but every couple of years he pops up with something that grabs my ears.
Like his one-off country side project The Notting Hillbillies, 1990.

Now comes news that Mr. Knopfler’s quietly been compiling a collection of duets with Emmylou Harris over the last seven years. The results see the light of day on All The Roadrunning, out next week on Nonesuch. You can stream four tracks here. The first, “This Is Us,” is a winner.
*I was gonna save this for a separate post about the weirdest soundtracks in my collection. (Waking Life, anyone? Pollock?!) But since it’s a better topic for discussion that Mark Knopfler’s solo work: What’s the weirdest soundtrack YOU own?

At some point in my younger days, I felt compelled to buy the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II (the live action movie) soundtrack (on cassette, no less), with such classics as “Ninja Rap” by Vanilla Ice (with such impressive lines as “go ninja go ninja go!”)

The weirdest one I own is actually (mostly) fantastic. It was for the Gas, Food, Lodging movie, and J. Mascis did this great, pretty, majestic guitar instrumentals for it.
Then there was a death metal song. Seriously.
Still never seen the movie.
I used to own Mickey Unrapped, in which Disney characters did near-covers of songs like Salt-N-Pepa’s “Whatta Man” and “Can’t Touch This.”
Even Color Me Badd did a song on the soundtrack for no apparent reason.
I only own the Garden State OST. It’s sooo cool, The Shins are on it, and ever since I saw Garden State and purchased the Garden State OST, I’ve become a huuuuuuuge The Shins fan. “They’ll change your life” indeed!
Judgement Night = BEST SOUNDTRACK EVER
The weirdest I have is the “Meet The Deedles” soundtrack. I bought it in a bargain bin for 2 dollars solely for the song “American Girls” by Homie. Homie was basically Rivers Cuomo in disguised and supposedly had members from Soul Coughing, The Rentals, & Cake. I loved that damn song. Not sure if I still love it. It’s been a while sinvce I’ve heard it. Sadly, they were never heard from again…
The best most underrated soundtrack I own is the “A Life Less Ordinary” soundtrack. It’s got the diversity oout the wazzo (Elvis, Bobby Darin & Prodigy, Sneaker Pimps) but it works remarkably well together.
I actually BOUGHT the casette soundtrack to Beetejuice. But in my defense: I was ten. At that age, I think movie soundtracks were the only music I bought. Or maybe I liked Harry Belafonte?
it’s about damn time my man Mark has gotten his due credit on the blogosphere. My man’s been spittin’ the mad ill ryhmes forevs.
AND he’s one of the best damn guitar players and song writers the world has ever seen (as long as you – like me – attribute that f’ing song ‘twisting by the pool’ to a bandana that was on too tight).

the winner : space jam – and in an import version (i live in brazil ). i bought this thing when i was 8, but it´s still here in my collection, next to elliott smith´s either/or . here we have , r kelly ( “i believe i can fly”) , seal , and a bunch of rappers. the weird thing : bugs bunny (really!) singing a song written by jay-z.
Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris will be on “A Prairie Home Companion” April 22nd performing songs from “All the Road Running”.
“Six Ways to Sunday” is pretty schizo, mixing pieces of the film’s score with hardcore rap outbursts from Schooly D and Nemesis, and–best of all–the insanely catchy “Chiribim Chiribom” by the Barry Sisters, a delightful little Old-Country romp that somehow la-la’d its way into Beck’s “Rental Car.”
I also acquired somehow the soundtrack to a movie about the last day before the end of the world (I’ve forgotten the title, and I never saw the film), and though it’s set in the “present day,” the filmmaker insisted on making it more poignant and creepy by stuffing the soundtrack with musty old ’70s AM-radio hits.
I have the Eraserhead sdtk. on vinyl. My absentee father sent it to me as a means to reconcile. Its pretty weird, seeing as how it is the Eraserhead sdtk…baby moans, industrial noises, weird random accordian…you know.
speaking of lynch movies, I have the Lost Highway soundtrack. Exec produced by trent reznor, but not that bad – NIN, a Bowie song from when he was friends with Reznor, etc. Plus a clip of Patricia Arquette saying “I want you”.

The soundtrack for ‘Muppets from Space’ is surprisingly AMAZING. Dust Brothers covering Earth Wind and Fire! George Clinton (practically a living Muppet) singing ‘Flashlight’ with a Muppet! The Commodores! The Isleys! The O’Jays! James Brown! Billy Preston! Freaking solid man.

Best soundtracks I own are Wild At Heart (Lynch with Nick Cage singing Elvis), Twin Peaks (the series), Faraway So Close (Wim Wenders film with U2, Nick Cave, Lou Reed). Especially the David Lynch OSTs, I had them on repeat for years.
Strangest is probably Fuck Your Dreams This Is Heaven, remakes by Minimal Compact, Niki Mono, etc. But I’ve always looked for the OST to Arizona Dreams, a film with Johnny Depp, Lily Taylor, Faye Dunaway and Jerry Lewis. There was a song on it I loved. Never found it.
it’s a tie between Flinstone’s: Viva Rock Vegas and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. But in my defense, I was under the age of 13 at the time.
The best is the soundtrack to The Big Chill. My weirdest is Dawson’s Creek 2. Never seen the show, but it’s some good music when you’re 14.
I own Kundun. It’s a movie I never saw–documentary about the Dalai Lama or something– the soundtrack is all Bhuddist chanting and drums and gongs. Composed by Philip Glass, I think that’s why I got it. V. strange.
I have the “First Love, Last Rites” soundtrack. Remember when Shudder To Think were supposed to be the next big thing? Oh, those were the days.

I also have the Twin Peaks (series) soundtrack and the soundtrack for Cruising. I love those!
I don’t think I would classify it as weird, but I love the soundtrack to Metropolis with the heavily influenced mood by Giorgio Moroder. I also love how he did Midnight Express and Cat People.
I want to reply to Scott who bought Beetlejuice – I was about the same age at the time (well maybe a little older) but a soundtrack with Day-O and other Belafonte classics, who can resist.
I’ll definately second the judgment night soundtrack. So many great songs on there. Helmet/House of Pain, Teenage Fanclub/De La Soul, Faith No More/Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. and my personal favorite Dinosaur Jr./Del the Funky Homosapien.
I did recently buy a used copy of the “In Good Company” sdtk, but I really only got it for one song.
