The Apples in stereo – “Dance Floor” (Stereogum Premiere)

By jessica / February 23, 2010

When I talked to Robert Schneider about Travellers In Space and Time, he was running around the studio working in as many vocoders and “blips and bleeps” as he could squeeze into his band’s new record. He also told me that “Dance Floor” was “one of the biggest productions” he’d ever attempted. A couple months later, the result of all his hard work sounds just as squelchy as he hoped, with about five juicy analog keyboards bouncing along the roller-skate tempo, as Schneider hinted it would probably be a little slow for dancing, but the song’s about how all the world’s dance floors are gone. And that falsetto he was “scared shitless” to try out? High enough to want to check the liner notes — really doesn’t seem like a voice so light and airy can come out of a grown-ass man (compliment!).
