Last year’s Clash-sampling, terror-ific “Paper Planes” found a second life this summer, thanks to Pineapple Express and a bunch of hot rappers. Maya tells Rolling Stone, “The way human beings hear stuff, it’s like, suddenly a song sounds better to you because it’s been in a movie.” Sensing that we’ve heard enough shitty covers by now, Mad Decent recently declared the track dead. Of course, it is far from dead: Billboard Hot 100 has “Planes” at #9 (with a bullet?) and Kala gets rereleased with six bonus tracks next month. Among them is a remix of “Boyz” featuring Jay-Z. You can download the MP3 here.

And as we mentioned on Saturday, Diesel threw a big international birthday party the other day, where a visibly pregnant Maya (relax, blogosphere) performed live mash-ups with N.E.R.D., Franz Ferdinand, and T.I.

Here’s “Paper Planes” with Rye Rye and Pharrell.

Congrats to M.I.A. and her fiance Benjamin Brewer. Do any of these atrocities come in onesie?

Wow, look at that bun in the oven. That explains the “retirement” and everything. Oh well, congrats M.I.A.- the queen of Indie ’08

  2. I find songs less interesting once they’ve been in a movie, unless they’re really well placed but that’s rare. It’s just an exposure thing. The common folk won’t seek out things unless they’re right in from of them.

That Jay-Z mix of Boyz sounds horrible.
