Today Daily Show veteran Frank DeCaro kicked off NYC Gay Pride Weekend with this countdown on his Sirius radio show, OutQ 106.
Top Ten Gayest Songs Ever
1. Lucille Ball and Bea Arthur – “Bosom Buddies”
2. Sylvester – “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)”
3. ABBA – “Dancing Queen”
4. Andy Bell & k.d. lang – “Enough is Enough”
5. Tim Curry – “Sweet Transvestite”
6. Pete Shelley – “Homosapien”
7. Doris Day – “Secret Love”
8. Klaus Nomi – “You Don’t Own Me”
9. The Weather Girls – “It’s Raining Men” [Fun fact: co-written by Paul Shaffer]
10. The Smiths – “Handsome Devil” / David Bowie – “Boys Keep Swinging” (Tie!)
I’ve never even heard of #1. But I do have a funny story about #9.
At my sister’s wedding (April ’05), the band played “It’s Raining Men.” In subsequent weeks, I jokingly insisted to my mother how AWESOME that moment was. Jokingly. But somehow she got it in her head that she LOVED the song. She insisted it be played at my wedding to Eliza six months later. On our big night, I gave the band explicit instructions not to play it under any circumstances. Even if the groom’s mother requested it. Post-honeymoon I get this e-mail…

Subject: HiYou didn’t play It’s Raining Men. It’s not nice.
I should’ve got her a Weather Girls CD for Mother’s Day. Or sent her this.
Arnold Schwarzenegger – “It’s Raining Men” (MP3 Link Expired)
Anyone got the Journey tune?
Anyway, back to DeCaro’s list. It’s missing Rufus does Judy, but Amrit went ($90!) and should have some commentary for y’all later.

How the hell isn’t Sylvester #1?
I think the ‘Gayest” song ever is 50 ways to leave your lover….just my opinion…HA
Im lookin back of all the comments and laugh…u ppl brought up some good ones! Im 2 sexy for my shirt…..lol

Okay… embarrassing to admit, but I have no idea why that Pete Shelley song made the ist. I love that song, but never really listened to the lyrics. So what’s so gay about it?
i just posted a ten-song mp3 mixtape of gay indie rock, which isn’t as gay as Sylvester, but certainly gayer than the Smiths. I mean, jeez, his ambiguity was cute in the 80s, but will Morrissey ever just come out already?

Thanks El Payo. I’m sorta scared to listen.
Depeche Mode’s “Boys Say Go” needs some serious consideration.
Depeche Mode’s “What’s Your Name?” needs some serious consideration.
I think I accidentally said another song…my bad. This is the song I meant to say.
I am shocked, shocked, that “I Will Survive” is nowhere to be found on this list.
i will survive is an AMAZING song…. Are you serious? WTF?
Though a bandmember is represented, whither Erasure’s “Chains of Love”? It’s triumphant and dancable, and therefore fabulous.
You think this has anything to do with Gay Pride weekend?:
Pet Shop Boys announce North American Tour. More info and dates on their official site:
http://www.petshopboys.co.uk
Cheers!
Yeah, those songs aren’t half as gay as http://gaypimp.com/media/audio/soccer%20practice.mp3
what about Queen’s “Body Language” ???
“Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Woah now…..that song is pimp….how could u hate it?
YMCA?
The only thing gayer than an Abba song is an Erasure cover of an Abba song. And there are plenty of them

I miss Frank DeCaro on TDS. I know his old “Out at the Movies” schtick wouldn’t really work on the new format of the show, but there’s got to be some way the show could use him.
BTW, did anyone see the iTunes Music Store’s Gay Pride Month playlist? In my opinion, it wasn’t gay enough. NOT NEARLY ENOUGH. Too much generic 90s dancepop, not enough Army of Lovers! (I’ve got a detailed review on my own site, if anyone is interested: http://tinyurl.com/j8nq5 )
whilst on the road with my (now defunct) band, at a service station I bought a 2 cassette compilation called ‘the gayest music ever’ or something.
when the totally embarrassed clerk who sold it to me gave me a receipt “if i wanted to return it”, I asked him “what? if it’s not gay enough?”
then we listened to it , and it was plenty gay.
re: pete shelley–is it cause he’s gay and Homosapien has ‘homo’ in the title? if not, i’m at a loss too…
my contribution is i downloaded Erasure’s Two Ring Circus yesterday. I still f***king love Erasure like it’s 1987
The Lucille Ball/Bea Arthur track is from the musical remake “Mame” based on the book “Auntie Mame written by Patrick Dennis.
I prefer the Rosalind Russell version of the film, no dance numbers, no spontaneous singing by Bea…she kind of scares me.
Since all of The Village Peoples’ songs were thinly-veiled gay double entendres I’m going to have to nominate their whole catalogue. Still amazing to me how that group was popular 30 years ago. People must’ve been REALLY naive.
C’mon people!!! The BBC banned “Homosapien” because of the line “homo superior in my interior.”
i was sorta impressed that frank decaro is listening to klaus nomi and the smiths. i once passed him on an early morning in the west village (natch), walking a couple of pomeranians (natch), in a mumu and slippers (natch). guess i was wrong to stereotype him.
What about that Haddaway song?
What exactly makes a song gay? Gay performers? Gay lyrics? What? Pardon me for not sharing your outlook but I don’t quite follow…
See, when a boy song has sex with another boy song, that song is then considered gay. Clear now?
A song can be deemed “gay” through the criteria of lyrics, danceability, orientation of the performer(s), status of said performer(s) in the gay community, and the overall atmosphere of gayness.
On that note, what about “Go West” by the Pet Shop Boys AND the Village People? There aren’t many things gayer than that. Except maybe “I Am What I Am” by “La Cage Aux Folles” as sung by Gloria Gaynor. Or the techno remix of the “Brokeback Mountain” theme.
I agree with Evan about nominating the whole Village People catalogue, but I have to especially point out their songs “San Francisco” and “Fire Island” for their status as gay Meccas.
Anyway, ten is too small a number for all the fabulous songs considered “Gayest Song Ever”.
Gayest lyrics? Gayest artist? “The bitch is back ” by Elton John. Need I say more.
I like the majority of those songs.
Its so sad that your all so sqeamish. I’m not gay, I just like chessy music with a good rhythm. If that makes me gay to ppl lke you then fine. Still, I like stereomum to stereogum. thats pretty awesome.
Thank you and Goodnight.
My goodness!
No self-respecting gay man would be caught dead listening to the LUCILLE BALL version of Bosom Buddies! It’s blasphemy! That movie was worst than “A Chorus Line”!
The Angela Lansbury version is far better, and far gayer. It also contains stars of the two biggest shows from the mid-80s/early 90s for middle aged women (aka gay men).
I think one of the campest songs ever has to be ‘Physical’ by Olivia Newton-John! I love it whenever I hear it! all together now ‘let’s get physical……..’
FUCK DAT SON! How the fuck can you call the smiths AND david bowie gay? You need to suck a fuck.
I’m Too Sexy=Right Said Fred
Gay
Gay
Gay
What about Queen’s “We are the Champions” a song about emergence of gay rights? Or Elton Montello’s Jet Boy Jet Girl?
This is fucked.
Im a huge Tim Curry lover and
i was so bored i typed ‘gayest songs ever’
and i clicked the first link and read the list….WTF?
How is Sweet Transvestite gay?
That song was so awesome, plus,it was meant to be sung it the movie
to match his role.
Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels, all those high pitched notes, and the “na na na na’s”, it just reeks of gayness
People need to get this “the word gay is an insult” thing out of their heads, because it’s not an insult. It simply describes a man who likes to date and/or have sex with other men, and that’s neither good nor bad, so if a song matches a gay role, then it’s gay and ther’s no problem with that.
“Sweet Transvestite” is therefore a completely gay song, and so is “Handsome Devil”, but what I find bewildering about the latter is that I think of my boyfriend whilst listening to it and I’m a woman.
the gayest song ever is baby (justin bieber)
no no no…the gayest song ever would be too shy
by Kajagoogoo….however the song is amazing
Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Relax ( Don’t Do It )
