Phosphorescent - Here's To Taking It Easy Cover Art

Matthew Houck spent the three years since the quiet triumph of his Pride LP processing others’ works and often distributing the results — see his cover of Malvina Reynolds’ “Little Boxes,” his takes on the Righteous Brothers and Nick Cave, or his entire album devoted to the works of Willie Nelson (fittingly billed To Willie). After systematically digesting the wares of those accomplished elders, Phosphorescent return with Here’s To Taking It Easy, a long-player of originals announcing itself with the presumably autobiographically titled single “It’s Hard To Be Humble (When You’re From Alabama).” (Matthew’s from Alabama, and full of Pride.) The rollicking pedal steel and horn-section are a throwback and a step away from that last album’s woozed and gothic folk beauty, taking its cues from a crate of dusty records circa late ’60s/early ’70s instead. And proud.

Here’s To Taking It Easy is out 5/11 in the U.S. (5/10 in the UK) via Dead Oceans.
