When the Walkmen released their fine fourth album You & Me, musically able employees at the Nashville record store Grimey’s New and Preloved Music decided to celebrate by performing Walkmen songs at an in-store. (Three of Grimey’s employees are in an actual non-Walkmen cover band, the Privates.) The Walkmen caught wind of the event and, all these weeks later, invited the Privates to open for them at Nashville’s the Basement this past Monday (10/13). Taking it a step further, the Privates backed up Hamilton Leithauser on his encore performance of Bows and Arrows track, “Thinking of a Dream I Had.” Pretend you were there:

That was more exciting than Record Store Day.

Saw them in Austin about a week ago. It really was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. The new album sounds great live and the band sold merch after the show. Really nice guys and really great band.

The band was also really strong Tuesday at the Southgate House in Newport, KY. As Leonard stated above, the new album sounds great live. You & Me is a serious contender for Top 5 album of the year status.

  8. the monotonix/joos combo was top notch, but man…. you just shoulda been there.

I saw the Walkmen in Madison about a month ago and they blew the roof of the place. They definitely upstaged the headlines Okkervil River.

  11. That was one of the best shows i’ve ever seen, that night. thank you for using my video.

  12. I saw them at the Southgate House in KY and found myself at times a lil bored. But the guys themselves were signing my setlist and stuff. The Rat really kicked ass live. It was cool to see them outside of my former NyC area.

  13. Grimeys = best record store in the world.

And that show was amazing — second best show in Nashville this year, just behind Grizzly Bear back in August.
