I’ve been digging the new Horrors video since Pitchfork linked to it last week. It’s director Chris Cunningham’s first video in seven years! And just when my “Windowlicker” nightmares had ended. Oh well.

Apparently Chris discovered the two minute tune — think Art Brut meets Prodigy — on MySpace and decided it would benefit from some epileptic dancing from Samantha Morton (Minority Report, Sweet And Lowdown). During the chorus, Samantha’s character’s intestines spew out of her body. Lovely.

Chris tells Dazed & Confused: “I’d find it hard to make a video for a track which sounded completely retro. It would just make me think of old things. To me, ‘Sheena is a Parasite’ sounds very special and futuristic.”

Here’s the best part: the Horrors have signed to Stolen Transmission, Ultragrrrl’s label.

Sarah and I have been exchanging excited e-mails about the video. She thinks you guys might actually like it (I concur), but believes Stereogum readers HATE HER GUTS? Awww, they don’t hate you Sarah. They hate everything! Mazel Tov. This rocks:

you mean Ultragirl/Island Def Jam Records

her label is window dressing for the big major

  2. No, she’s right. We hate her.

  3. BUT … what do you think of the video?

  4. It’s an interesting video, but not one of Cunninghams best. I will say that the music is refreshingly different from Cunningham’s usual collaborators.

    Final thoughts:

If you want really good Cunningham, look up “Windowlicker” or “Come to Daddy”

Also, wouldn’t it be great if Cunningham directed a feature film that would set the standard for present-day-scary-movies, and possibly revamp the entire horror genre?

wait, how is this chris cunningham’s first video in 7 years? didn’t he do aphex twin’s ‘rubber johnny’ video recently?

  7. sarah is total and utter cheese ball trash. and her bands suck. video is decent. i just wish sarah would stick to her blog and misshapes so I dont’ have to hear about her. I thought us gum readers were safe from her tedious media antics

  8. Are the guitarist / drummer / keyboardist supposed to look like evil Frodo? I’m not commenting on the music or the video particularly.. just being as superficial as possible.. but c’mon – that’s evil Frodo.

No no, she has The Oohlas! Anyone with them can be forgiven their sins

  10. I’m a total reformed Sarah-hater. Have to respect what that (lucky little punk-ass) girl has done–flipping her whole thing into a label of her own (a proper record label, with money for their bands and shit) at, what, 25?

Don’t love the Horrors (she may have been too anxious to sign a British act) but you can’t say you wouldn’t kill for the same opportunity. She’s just doing it for the kids, man, and that’s what rock n roll is all about.

  11. uhhh i guess cor. the kids need better taste

  12. Samantha Morton and her family came into the record store I previously worked at and spent a shit-load of money. Nice lady, and great taste in music!

Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams also used to frequent the store. Also very nice folks with some good taste.

And these Horrors fellows are definitely one of the more interesting of the Brit-rock bands I’ve heard in recent years.

  13. That video was awesome

    re: matt

rubber johnny was actually a chris cunningham short film that aphex twin did the music for.. so not technically a music video.

    ..at least i think so.

    love the video.

Incidentally, I just watched Rubber Johnny the other day and while I really like Cunningham’s stuff before these two films/videos, after these I’m starting to wonder if he’s going to continue this direction or whether he’s actually going to have ideas again at some point.

Both Rubber Johnny and this consist of hectic movements and people somehow spreading their intestines and miscellaneous other gore all over the darkened room. Not impressed, rather disappointed.

Cunningham says he can’t work with bands that are retro. I thought the Horrors sounded pretty retro. The Fall mixed in with some sound effects.

Did anyone else notice how Ultragrrrits now bags on “boring” hipster music, and is suddenly into emo mall punk, which conveniently is what the kids are buying right now?

I guess the Spinto Band single she put out didn’t sell enough copies.

Ooh, a bunch of skinny hipster kids with shaggy hair that wear ties and gratuitously rip off punk/ synth music from the 70′s and 80′s. That horse hasn’t been beaten to death already.

    why all the hate?
