Rolling Stone has a update on the ex-Smiths axeman’s ongoing collaboration with Modest Mouse: it’s become a full time gig!
According to Brock, Marr?s membership is so unequivocal, he will tour with MM in support of their next record, tentatively titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and tentatively due this fall. ?He made a cautious commitment to write and record with us, and then the tighter we got, he was like, ?okay, let?s tour too,?? Brock said. ?Then he was pretty much a member of the band – not pretty much. He?s a full blown member of the band. It?s really fuckin? nice.?
Didn’t see that one coming. Good news for people who love Meat Is Murder?

I want this to be chocolate in my peanut butter, but it hardly ever is.
This promises to be great…
aww cool
yay new modest mouse. have no idea what to expect from Johnny being in the band, but Isaac is Isaac, so I doubt it will be too…whatever. I’m so inarticulate right now.
Whoah.
Whatever Modest Mouse does, it’s just about always interesting. This is no exception. Can’t wait to hear a new record. And with Johnny Marr? What? That’s crazy.
Johnny Marr blows. Isaac rocks. i hope this doesnt turn out to be one big pile of meh. talkin shit about a pretty sunset
i hope it’s as good as “boomslang”…
while they are at it, maybe they also can take in john squire, graham coxon and nick mccabe.
explains why johnny marr showed up at the pearl jam show in portland two weeks ago.
how can anyone say that the guitarist and songwriter for the Smiths “blows”? THATS one big pile of hipster meh.
Johnny Marr probably showed up at the Pearl Jam show because he met Eddie Vedder at Neil Finn’s Seven Worlds Collide shows. It would be interesting to see what kind of music could come from this combination.
Yeah that takes some balls to say Johnny Marr blows. And by balls I mean straight-up idiocy.
a dream come true. holy shit.
Well, let us not forget how horrible Marr’s past little projects have been. Sure, yada yada.. he was in the Smiths, but that was a long time ago. But hell, Modest Mouse has taken a pretty big u-turn from their sound that was so appealing, it might be a perfect match.
he was only in the Smiths, yada, yada, one of the most influential and best groups ever, yada, yada, made more great music than Modest Mouse could ever dream of, yada, yada, yada…
c’mon people. I would say that Marr’s misses are still better than most “hits”.
Ohhh Sick!
This is going to be like Cream, or The Traveling Wilburys! I Love super groups!!
“Boomslang” was unremarkable, but then again “Sad Sappy Sucker” was unlistenable. So there. Everybody has their off moments. This may prove to be interesting.
I hope that Marr has finally found a home. He’s been all over the place since the Smiths ended. The The, Electronic, w/ the Healers. Maybe he’ll finally find some peace with Modest Mouse.
For those MM fans out there…does anybody enjoy “Building Something out of Nothing” as much as I do?
saw johnny years ago with THE THE….
good for him!
glad to see one of the most under-appreciated musician get some….
i’d go to the show!
i’m just glad he didn’t join pearl jam….
damn, i miss the smiths…
If he’s as beneficial to MM as he was to The The (which he was, even though Soul Mining is their best album by just that much), I say success.
yuck. modest mouse were once amazing to me, now i just see crowds of soccer moms lining up to purchase suvs and sedans when i hear their music and can’t enjoy it anymore. well, i guess that’s now marr’s demographic?? (p.s., i still think marr’s brilliant in general, just hate modest mouse)
yes, building nothing…rocks.
marr should be interesting, but issac does’nt need the help.
and what are you doing on this site if you hate modest mouse?
To Rena,

grow up and think a bit and try not to be so special and hip all the time. They make their music, some people enjoy it that didn’t before, at least they aren’t listening to other crap. Why does your appreciation of music depend on what other people drive?
In trying to be so hip, you are part of the crowd that booed Dylan when he went pop/electric. And we all know how horrible that went.

I am guessing you have liberal political beliefs…you don’t want a larger part of the country to share what you enjoy?

I think that person was reffering to Modest Mouse allowing that car comercial to use their song. I think it was 3rd planet. Well yeah, I know what your talking about but I do not agree with you. We all have to pay the bills. Being strapped for cash sucks. We do what we have to do. It dosn’t mean we sell our band to the first johnny suit and tie who walks into your indie town playing who wants to be a millionare with all the local angst kids, but we pay the bills so we can make more music.

I think it was Gravity Rides Everything that was sold for the car commercial.
To stick up for Johnny Marr… The greatest thing he did was to leave a great band “The Smiths.” By doing this he would leave a legacy. Think about it… if the Smiths never split, within time they would of turned out to be another boring, crappy group much like REM, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, became! etc… Let’s just face it, U2 has been very inspirational, but now they have become boring, repetitive and the Edge’s playng is just the same thing over and over again! U2 songs are starting to suck and Bono is very annoying. Look… all these artist are talented, but it’s only natural when you’re stuck in the same element for too long, there is only so much you can do.
Johnny Marr new about this 20 years ago and realized he’s a musician, songwriter, guitarist first. So as any true musician would in a sense “spread their wings” and decided to work with a number of artists – many of them great. This is what makes Johnny Marr a collective, versatile player. And I’m sure he’ll play with Modest Mouse and at the same time do other things as well! Again, as a musician he’s doing the the right thing.
Marr’s intricate melody-work seems perfect for MM. It’s enough to make me buy the cd.
