The title track from Jamie Lidell’s Compass had an unusually vulnerable vocal for Lidell, an attitude as well as stylistic shift. “The Ring” has Lidell’s usual swagger intact, though, while the video has Lidell’s usual weirdness. Lidell can do some strange, expressive things with his face while he’s singing, but he goes into full-body spasms in time with “The Ring”‘s farty lead bass line. It puts this song in Multiply‘s territory, great for anyone who thought Jim was a little too slick and subdued.

Compass is out 5/18 via Warp.

  1. Love it. Including the “farty” bass line.

  2. Great track…reminds me of Stevie Wonder, maybe its just his voice and the funk…the funk helps too.
