Tokyo Police Club - Champ imagery

It’s been a minute since we heard from Tokyo Police Club, last seen appearing on Desperate Housewives back in 2008. They’ve been touring, writing, and recording (both together and with others) since then. This month they finished mixing their second album, and are offering up a sample while it’s being mastered. The album will be called Champ, and according to singer/bassist Dave Monks, it’ll have “… eleven songs, a Disney character, fuzzy bits, Canadian spelling, hockey sound effects, me singing the lowest note in my range, one (1) saxophone note.” It’ll also have this track. The title is misleading, “Breakneck Speed”‘s speed is languorous compared to their earliest tracks. Wistful and ambiguous, it simultaneously yearns for “the big bad years” of youthful recklessness, and seems relieved that they’re over. It all depends on whether you think Monks is always singing “It’s good to be back” or if he switches to “It’s good to be bad.” Have a listen:

  1. I’ve missed TPC, so I’m very glad to see they are finishing a new album. yay!

  2. looking forward to the new record, they are a fun band

also I think at 3:45 this is their longest song so far which is an awesome longest-song-length

    • yeah with elephant shell being 13 tracks in a well rounded 28 mins, wow. only added like 10 mins of play from the ep length. no matter though, it was at least 28 mins of good music which some 40+ min albums can’t say…

  3. Man, oh man, 2010 is completely loaded with great music, looking forward to this album.

  4. They played this at their outdoor show in Vancouver during the Olympics. The sound wasn’t that great because they only had a 5 minute sound-check, but it’s good to hear that they’re back! The recorded version sounds much better.

  5. They certainly haven’t changed much, which isn’t really an issue for me.

  6. i’m so f-ing excited for this record. tokyo police club never lets me down.

  7. I’m gonna go ahead and acknowledge the elephant in the room a.k.a the fact that pitchfork didn’t post this song. I know it’s in bad taste to care about what those snobs post and don’t post, but they just have too much influence over what gets taken seriously in indie music not to care. I am a big fan TPC and don’t want them to lose momentum/legitimacy just because pitchfork doesn’t think they are post-worthy….Thank you Stereogum for covering TPC, even though they aren’t necessarily the flavor of the week!

  8. sounds pretty good!
Love the song. Great to see them putting back two worth while albums back to back

  9. booo this song

  10. Thank god for the return of TPC. You have been missed!

  11. Welcome Back! Sophomore Sensation.

  12. Welcome Back! Sophemore Sensation.

  13. I’ve never heard it before. I thought it was very good.
