There are a number of dusky Shangri-Las and Phil Spector-nodding bands circulating under the “indie rock” banner these days — Dum Dum Girls are the best of the lot. Dee Dee & Co’s excellent Sub Pop debut I Will Be establishes a powerfully assured pop haze from its updated take on “It Only Takes On Night” through the familiar sleepy closer “Baby Don’t Go.” (Live, the group is just as swaggering and substantial.) “Jail La La” isn’t a new DDG song either, but like the aforementioned, it was re-recorded and produced by Richard Gottehrer for the new album. It also has a new Christin Turner-directed video, one that finds Dee Dee handing over her leather jacket and getting fingerprinted and processed, but still finding time to make a call for help (“Someone tell my baby, or else he won’t know I need saving”), to smoke some cigarettes, and go for a ride on her motorcycle. Right, she doesn’t really need saving.

This song is sooooo addictive. Way better with this slicker production than the overly fuzzed out early version.
