On 9/23, the Virgin Festival hits Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. And we’re gonna give away two pairs of tickets (tickets are $100 each!). You’re responsible for your travel and lodging, but Pimlico is less than an hour from Washington, D.C., 2 hours from Philadelphia, 3 hours from New York City, and (we imagine) pretty damn close to Joel Madden

The fest features over 20 acts on 3 stages (Two Outdoor Stages and Dance Tent) from noon to 10 p.m.

Two Performance Stages
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Who
The Killers
Flaming Lips
The Raconteurs
Gnarls Barkley
Scissor Sisters
Keane
Thievery Corporation
Wolfmother
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
New Pornographers
Drive-by Truckers
Kasabian
Brazilian Girls

DJ Tent
Tiesto
John Digweed
Carl Cox
Rjd2
2manydjs
James Holden

If you want a pair of tickets just leave a comment that indicates (1) you will actually attend and not back out at the last minute, ’cause that pisses us off and (2) the act you’re most excited to see! Use your real e-mail so we can contact you if you win (don’t worry, you’re not signing up for anything.)

Contest ends Monday, 9/4 at 6 PM EST, and we’ll contact the winners shortly after! Good luck.

I’m close enough to be able to get there rather easily – anyhow, Maryland is a nice place to visit – I would definitely go, because as of yet I’ve never seen CYHSY, and I totally want to. And yes, I do think they’re more exciting than the Who. So shoot me.

  2. I’ve got Delta miles saved up and the total willingness to skip class. Give ‘em to me.

And as far as the band i’d be most excited to see (damn you for making me pick one)… i gotta go with The Raconteurs.

  3. LInk  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

I am so ready to gow. It’s time for a road trip and I like to pick up hitchhikers over 50 y/o with no panties. No way I’m backing out of this one……!

I actually live in Baltimore and would love to go, but lack the funds (and friends with funds) to do so. But onto the prostation:

The act I want to see is Thievery Corporation. Not just because they make great music to have cocktails with, but because as a newbie DJ, I find that their mixes have a huge range of influences that make my sessions at the Red Maple (930redmaple.com) a LOT more fun. There’s nothing quite like watching people light up to their music… to transition from their organic/new worldian chill tracks to their funk/soul-youwannagroove vibes. And of course, being in Baltimore, the diverse clientele is always amusing. So I’d like to see them most of all, because it might be a little surreal with some booze.

In any case, if I win tickets, I (tall asian chick) with another girlfriend (or my sister, another tall asian chick) will definitely go to the concert, take photos, add commentary, and send you the results. Hopefully, it will be less catastrophic than my last festival, which burned down in a firey blaze in upstate NY.

I’d like to see 2manydjs… if only because their blatant thievery of other’s work product could leave them vulnerable to a mid-set FBI raid. George Bush doesn’t care about mash ups, people.

  6. I like to listen to music. I like to have fun concert times. I will like to see The New Pornographers. If their name is any indiction of their live show, it will be niiiiiiiice! Of course I will attend because it will be good. I also live pretty damned close. Oh Yeah! Obviously The Flaming Lips will be fun too.

  8. I would love to go to this. Been a who fan since Keith was alive. I have stayed up all night in line to get who tix for 20 people in my dorm w/ my room mate. we were 2nd in line. the 1st in line ordered 10 and the dot matrix (!? what’s that?!) printer jammed and we had to wait for it to print 10 tix of black dots. so now his seats were in row 6. then we were up and we got row 14! sheesh! 4 minutes in! great show at the old capital center.

so since i live about 40 minutes away, i would definitely go.

(i also want to see gnarls and new pornos…)

  9. ashlee  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2006

I live 40 minutes away and I think I should get the free tix cuz I’ll make the concert all that much more fun :) I wanna see Red Hot Chili Peppers and Gnarlsl Barkley the most!!

  10. allen  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

i’ll definitely attend because, well, its only an hour away, and all the acts (sans keane, i guess) are listenable.

i suppose i’m most excited about two bands: the chili peppers, because i grew up in the 90s, and they should be on every 90s kid’s list of bands they need to see live, and drive-by truckers because they make me happy to be alive.

man, if this thing is picked by like, most enthusiastic post, i’m screwed. hopefully it’s random.

  11. I think its a 3 way tie between RHCP, the Who and 2manydjs. I’ve wanted to see RHCP for years and never ended up going. The WWho is legendary and 2manydjs are amazing. I saw them in Ibiza in July – it was unreal. Nothing like hearing hard techno banging into Nelly Furtado’s Maneater

  12. Charlotte  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

#1, the who, because it’s the who. And RHCP was the first band I ever saw in my life and they will bring sweet, sweet adolescent memories.
I live a stones throw away, I will definitely go.

i will without a doubt be there (if i win), and im extatic to see both the flaming lips and the red hot chili peppers. they both have huge back catalouges of amazing stuff, yet just released fantastic new albums, and from what ive heard, put on one hell of a live show. cant fucking wait.

  15. No Duh, I Want To see the Who. And I promised my older sister that I’d see the Scissor Sisters this tour go round. Now Stereogum would not make me go back on my word, would they?

  16. Andres  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

To whom it may concern… Not only am I excited about September 23 being on a Saturday, my favorite day of the week, but the fact that the Virgin Festival is occurring on that very day.

I live in California (I have relatives in NYC). However, finding my self with nothing to do these days I believe a road trip is in order. I went recently to Vegas for the Killers secret show but alas it was already jam-packed. This might be my only chance to see the killers and the Scissors Sisters on the same night.

It would be highly appreciated if I were to win the tickets. Thanks

this gonna be one hell of a show i’m excited to see every one on this line up … betcha theivery corp comes up with something extra special considering they’re playing to their hometown crowd … definitely gotta go … thanks virgin and STEREOGUM!! the greatest blog that all ways has the ins!!

  20. I’d want to see the Flaming Lips the most since I’ve never seen them and they put on such a great show (so I hear). I live in Richmond which is not all that far away. A bunch of my buddies in Baltimore already have tickets so I’ve been bummed I can’t join them. Make me happy!

  21. anne  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

    1. Yes I’d go. I live in Philadelphia. It’s an easy trip down the road.

    2. I’d be psyched to see RJD2. He’s my neighbor. I saw him at Starbucks once! Carl Cox is an amazing performer. And the New Pornographers ain’t too shabby either.

  22. megan  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I was so excited for this fest, and then I saw the ticket price, and I was sad. Then I came to Stereogum and saw the contest, and I was happy.

I’m a D.C. metro lady, so it’s but a wee hop skip and a jump for me (ok, 45 minute drive) to Pimlico, so there will be no bailing out.

It would be lovely to see the Who (well, half of them, anyway). And the Flaming Lips, because I’ve always managed to miss them when they play anywhere near D.C. and I’ve always had dreams about being one of the folks who dress up in the animal costumes and frolic during their sets. And Wolfmother, but that’s only because I’ve already seen them 4 times this year and I think I might be addicted…

  23. Barto  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I live only 40 minutes away and if my car breaks down, I’ll ride my bike! But I’m most excited to see Gnarls Barkley, covering the doors? has to be amazing. Also what could be better then sitting by the beer stand and hearing from the speaker Roger Daltrey yelling, “We’re all wasted” Hell yes.

  24. LAUREN  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I’D PROBABLY SHIT MYSELF IF I WON, but then I’d get myself all cleaned up to go see Thievery Corporation and The Flaming Lips!! I’ve always wanted to go see them, but when you live in a little town in Miami, then seeing great bands doesn’t happen often. Thank God I’m moving north!

  25. I am most excited to see The Sam Cookes, I mean Gnarls Barkley. I live in the DC Area – definitely want to go!

  26. Perry  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I’d actually be most excited to see new porno’s – still have never been to one of their shows! Me and my car pledge attendance should we win.

  27. maureen  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

    i’ll be there! (hometown=arlington,va)

most excited to see the raconteurs and the flaming lipss)

  28. I am most excited to see the who, then it would have to be the drive by truckers or the racontuers.

  29. I am most excited to see the who, then it would have to be the drive by truckers or the raconteurs.

  30. I live in Rockville, Md., which is only an hour or so from Baltimore. I’d most love to see the Flaming Lips — who can beat their who or their catalog of songs? I saw them on my birthday a few years ago, and my birthday is pretty close to the show date. Give me a present!

  31. timothy  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

i would love to see the who show the new pornographers how the power pop kids used to let loose.

  32. Vlad  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

Would definitely be interested. Going mainly for The Who, Raconteurs and the Flaming Lips. And, my as will be down close for Drive By Truckers.

    I will GO.

  33. Bribo  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I will attend. Excited to see the Racontuers and Flaming Lips.

  34. hmm.. i live in dc and was looking fwd to this concert until i found out the tkt price.. which makes this giveaway EXTREMELY interesting. i am most looking forward to seeing the flaming lips, as i’ve heard they’re well, “special” live (most recently at their performance at this year’s SXSW). i would also like to see kasabian (again), new pornographers and the drive by truckers. not looking fwd to wolfmother, but hey, it’s a festival.

  35. Zach  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I’ll definitely be there. Most excited about seeing The Who, or what’s left of them.

  36. Dave  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I will most def. attend if I win the tickets.

I can never turn down a show from The WHO, or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

I hope two favs don’t get me DQ’d

  37. Rebecca  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I’ve been looking for a reason to get out of Boston all summer and this looks like my long awaited perfect excuse! Trust me, I won’t back out. I need a break.

The last time I saw Jack White, I lost the hearing in my left ear completely for 48 hours, and yet, I’d still put him and the Raconteurs at the top of my list.

  38. Gregory Goodin  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

It has to be The Who, but I am sure there is going to be some mad duets with the artists, maybe some Jack White performing with the who. I would be pumped to see any number of those bands. Please, bless me with those tickets, as I promise to enjoy every single second of it and because I have never won a single contest on this site and I sign up for every one of them. Show a music fan from Indiana some love.

  40. 1. I will be there, I live two hours from B-more, so if I won, I would be there in a freaking heartbeat.

    2. The killers. (because they are so hot right now, and Brandon Flowers is a lyrical genius

How can you fight with, “We’re burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning when you were young”

  41. William  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

Hell Yes for the Flaming Lips and Gnarls Bark, I would ride a train, bus or shark! Any which way it takes I will be in Baltimore for the V Fest. Best import from UK since my hairs stood up from The Shinny Shin Shins. With my pair of tickets I could bring my “intimate secretary.” But as Wolfmother says, any “woman” will do.

  42. Shannon Stalter  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

So my friend Meghan, my oldest, dearest girly girl has been begging me to come visit her in Maryland… how better for two girls to play catch up than rocking out? I’ll definitely go, and would be totally psyched to see Wilco… Could you imagine all the fun duet permutations that could occur? Wilco and Pete Townsend… Brendon Benson and the New Pornographers…. oh it goes on and on.

  43. mikey  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

i will attend should i win – my wife is from Balmo’
and i want to see the Raconteurs and thievery, thanks!

  44. DAVE  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I will most certainly go and wear a Stereogum T-shirt if necessary.

  45. Adam  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I would DEFINITELY go because I’m dying to see the Flaming Lips yet again, along with 3/4 of the other bands playing :-)

  46. Fletcher  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

It’s not too far a drive from Rich’m, Virginia. I’d treat my lady to the Lips, the Racs, Gnarls, the New Pr0n0s, and Wolfmother. We’d check out CYHSY, and the Who as well. I think the $100 ticket price would be worth it for just the first 30 seconds of the Lips’ “Race For the Prize”.

  47. Jack  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I live in Maryland about an hour’s drive away so I’d definitely be there. My friend has already purchased tickets so I’ll definitely have someone to go with. The only reason I’ve been hesitant is the price.

I’m most excited about the Flaming Lips. They’re one of my favorite bands and I’ve never seen them live. Plus their shows are supposed to be spectacular.

Also, one of these days Wayne is going to pull off the remote control vibrating panties idea and I’m not missing that.

  48. Jill Swing  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

If you give me tickets, I will definitely go! I love The Who and to see them would be awesome.

  49. bryna  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

hmm… who to pick? while i’m psyched to see nearly all the bands on the main stages and it’s pretty much everyone i’m listening to at the moment, i’m going to have to go with rjd2. he’s fantastico and the only other time i saw him i was all by my lonesome and stuck behind this tall dude the whole time (and i’m not a tall girl). as for the other requirement, i live in dc and would buy the tickets myself but i work for a nonprofit… so it’s either this or no show for me!

  50. I desperately want to go, live only two hours away, could not possibly afford those tickets on my own, and have transportation. So yeah, if I won I’d be there. Oh, and I have NO prior obligations (other than work and college, but honestly-how important are they?) so I can definitely go.

Will you kill me if I say I’d be going for The Killers? Ah well, it’s the truth. I think I should still win though, haha…

Pick me, I’ll love you forever.

  51. Oh, and I’ve never been to a concert, which is generally pathetic. So yeah…I deserve to win.

  52. melissa  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

    1) Will definitely attend – my DC based friends are all going, so I won’t sleep on the streets and it’s an easy Chinatown bus ride from NYC.

    2) I saw the Who on a previous “farewell tour” – but I was in the womb, so I don’t really remember. Would love to see them as a non-fetus!

  53. Chris Fox  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

WOW!!! Is all that comes to mind when you mention all the headliners at the 06 Virgin Festival

I would have to say that the Who is who…I really want to see. I am 31 and have been listening to them since my older bro got me my 1st CD at age 10 Teenage Wasteland. He actually saw them back in the day with Keith Moon…-the best drummer ever

Gnarls Barkely-Crazy/ The Killers/Red Hot Chilli Peppers. These bands will probably never show there face in B-more again Hon for at least 5 yrs

This is a must see concert and I live in Baltimore and if I was picked I would take my 46 year old brother who is married with 3 kids to the concert. He needs to remember what fun is.

  54. mark  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2006

I live right outside of Baltimore and I really want to go to V Fest but im just a poor college student! From Gnarls to Clap Your Hands to the Flaming Lips, theres so many amazing acts…should be one of the better festivals this year.

  55. Paul  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2006

    1) Will definitely attend
    2) The Killers – would love to hear their new songs live before the album release

  56. Jill  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2006

I live in Baltimore so I’d definitely go if I won the tickets!

Would love to see The Who and Brazilian Girls!

  57. I wanna see Keane cause I just scored a big bag of blow and I wanna get that pasty kid to relapse. Plus, I only live 20 minutes away, so I HAVE to attend!

  58. Stuart  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2006

Okay, so I really only want to see the Scissor Sisters. And maybe Thievery Corporation. And The Who. And the New Pornographers. But to maintain my cool quotient, I promise to ignore/mock the following bands: The Killers, Kasabian, and Keane* (alliteration coincedental). Anyway, I live in DC so I would most certainly go were I not left destitute by a job at the Smithsonian that, after bills, leaves me with only enough money to buy excessively large valupaks of ground beef at Safeway. As you see, I am ever so deserving of this wondrous opportunity.

*now with more derogatory rehab references!

  59. I’d love to see Wolfmother. And I’d bring my girlfriend along for The New Pornographers. B’c she got ill during last year’s performance for Canada Day at Celebrate Brooklyn. So I had to bum rush the stage with some post-bar mitzvah tweens all by my lonesome.

  60. Beaze  |   Posted on Aug 30th, 2006

#1: Hello, FREE MUSIC, who would diss that? Of course I’d show.
#2: After Bonnaroo in June I’ve been itching for another jam-packed festival — and, a sweet chance to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah again!
#3 I’ve been trying to get Scissor Sisters, Wolfmother, and most especially, Killers tickets all summer and here they are, in a nice little package just waiting for me . . .
Thanks for the contest and for Stereogum!

  61. wraith  |   Posted on Aug 31st, 2006

what a fucking line up. anyone with half a dick would know that THIS IS THE STUFF… and so close to home too! so instead of going to Italian 101 on the 23, i’ll say “fongul that” and be at this show.

  62. sheryl  |   Posted on Sep 1st, 2006

    the flaming lips

  63. Snanfan  |   Posted on Sep 2nd, 2006

YES I would most definitley come if I won the tickets.

I’d want to see The Killers, The New Pornographers, Keane (if they come), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Flaming Lips, and The Who!!

  64. quizkiddonniesmith  |   Posted on Sep 2nd, 2006

    #1 i will definetly attend.

#2 lineup isnt the greatest, but it would be nice to see the new pornographers and cyhsy again

  65. Oh man, yey contests!

    1. I can definitely make it, as I live in MD.
    2. I’d e excited to see pretty much everyone, as I’ve never actually been to a festival before, but definitely most excited to see The Who. Wire & Glass has been keeping me entertained lately.

The price tag on these tickets make my poor student-loan paying self very sad. Ouch.

  66. Hey, cool site. I know this contest is WAY over, but if you still have some tix and have it in your heart to let a Fan of Rock go…

Thanks. I can be there. I will do an exclusive show report for your site, with pix, and interviews, I will get some. I am a published (poor) writer and will get you some band interviews or at least some good fan feedback.

Wolfmother kicks serious arse and will be great there – mark my words, rock people. Pls make my dream a reality.

I am absolutely stoked to possibly win tickets to the Virgin Festival in MD.. By far the best act that I’m looking forward to is Wolfmother. I’ve been following them since they’d performed pretty small scale hits in pubs in Australia. I visited last year and hooked up w/ their hit and they were crazzzy SICK. I’m about to take an awesome job in media advertising and I can most definitely help the publicity out by making these insane bands rock even more. Please, please, please.. make my life and give me the ticketssss

OMG I must see Regina Spektor! I love her! My boyfriend and I bonded over our love for “Samson” back when we were just friends and we want to walk down to it at our wedding one day. It would be unbelievable to see her perform it live. She is really an inspiration to a young singer song/writer like me. A real grass roots start and her own wonderfully wierd style, she is my idol. Winning these tickets would mean the world to me!

  73. Joel Hills  |   Posted on Jul 5th, 2007

Man I WANT TO SEE DEEP DISH and INFECTED MUSHROOM!!!!!!!!! These guys are huge in the electronic dance music world and have the types of sets which have you dancing for HOURS!!!!!! Last time I saw Infected mushroom the psytrance they make keeps you moving and moving for hours and the talent they have is AMAZING. And Deep DIsh is dc’s own home grown claim to the world EDM court, there house sets are legndary!!!!!!!!!!!!! Me and my g/f wanted to go to virigin fest and we have friends going but I lost my job in May and recently started a new one, but the disruption in funds cost us our chance of affording tickets. IT WOULD BE SO AWESOME TO HAVE THESE TICKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  74. Nate Hokenson  |   Posted on Aug 2nd, 2007

hey, this doesn’t look like virgin 2007 festival, but I’m still excited that this thread existed last year haha anyways-
holy shit! Bad Brains is playing!! my top pick for this festival is definitely the punk rock pioneers themselves….
if only I could get tickets haha life would be easier

  75. I AM SO EXCITED TO GO! i live in D.C right no for school so i def will be able to make it. I really want to see Paramore and the red hot chili peppers! I must see paramore, i love there music so much i listen to it everyday and it jsut makes me smile. and the red hot chili peppers are so awesome.
