  1. Unfortunately, the weakest song on the new record. But hell, a weak Decemberists song is better than the strongest (insert band here) song any day!!!

how irrelevant to post that at this point. everyone who wants the new album has it by now. but now that pitchfork says it’s okay i’m sure the stragglers will now be thrilled that they’re ‘allowed’ to hear summersong.

it’s catchy as hell, though. good stuff.

I actually think this is one of my favorite on the album, if I had to pick a least favorite it would be ‘When the War Came’ or the funky beats of ‘The Perfect Crime’…. but still, a bad Decemberists song is still pretty darn good.

the perfect crime grabbed me from first listen, but i thought it lost its luster as time went on, while other songs grow on you more and more with each listen. example: shankill butchers. it’s the ‘mariner’s revenge’ of the crane wife.

  5. Eh…clearly I’m the only one who doesn’t think this pwns. Seems kindof blah…

  6. I like it, and I still don’t think p-fork needs our mercy.

  7. sounds like nickel creek.

  8. just to touch back on the Pitchfork review debate–with the ability to preview songs via mp3 by almost any new band on music blogs, or band and label sites, I find that I almost never read album reviews anymore.
I mean, why would anyone make their listening choices based on the scribblings and preferences of some other person when you can just listen and decide for yourself?

i love the decemberists but that riff is identical to the riff in “we’re the ordianry” by starflyer 59. am i the only one who noticed that?

  10. a lot of the songs on the new cd (that i recieved legit via capitol… stealing whores) carry similar chord progressions of many songs. even of their own past melodies. it’s how music goes. originality in chord progression is fucking pointless in this day in age. you’re not going to find it- and it you do- what are the odds that it’ll be worth a damn? it’s a good decmberist-y album. diverse, but maintaining that concrete colin meloy grip.
“when the war came”‘s music sounds like jimmy eat world.
but, really- look at the album as a whole. it’s tied together quite well, and they seem to be a band that focuses on what other bands would consider minor (ie. tracklistings, time signatures, etc.).

    basically, i like it.
