When posting the vomit-inducing video for Dear God, I Hate Myself‘s title track, we learned that the song’s synth-lined gothic bleep and thump was created primarily on a Nintendo DS. In testament to Jamie Stewart’s instrument of choice, “This Too Shall Pass (For Freddy)” plays like an ’80s video game (not the first time Xiu Xiu’s gone that route), although instead of pimping Jamie’s favorite handheld gaming console  it’s a Xiu Xiu-branded Nintendo Gameboy making the rounds of the Pac-Man style maze (along with cigarettes, bloodily scraped faces, and liquor shots). Anachronism! Odd choice? Sure. It’s Xiu Xiu.

Dear God, I Hate Myself is out via Kill Rock Stars. The band headlines Bowery Ballroom with Tune-Yards, Zola Jesus, and Twin Sister this Friday, which is a bill that should not be missed.
