Lily Allen fans should head to Music Like Dirt for a zip of the original songs sampled on Alright, Still “and a few others that may or may not have been influences.” I had no idea I liked vintage reggae so much. Thanks Idolator for the tip!

The comp’s called Alright, Steal. Cute.

does anybody listen to this record anymore?

Vintage reggae holds its own with any of that early crossover rock/soul/r&b Beatles/everly/roy material. So catchy! Anyways, I never listened to her album, but it’s always nice to hear what little talent many samples artists users have. Is it too much to come up with a melody yourself?

    no. it’s too little, rockist.

    correction: uninformed rockist.

  5. Thanks for the link… wondered why so many people were visiting!

Vintage reggae is a constant joy. Ive been delving around in it for 20 years and I still get surprised by a gem I haven’t heard before. Go buy one of the mega cheap Trojan compilations or anything on Soul Jazz.
Glad you enjoyed the comp… and apologies for the cheesy Regal-Illegal, Alright Steal puns :)

    What makes me uninformed, exactly?

I guess I should of added sam cooke to that list of artists to fulfill all the genres mentioned. Anyways, what’s “too little”?

I don’t have the time to defend a decades old genre to you, but I was referring to, “…it’s always nice to hear what little talent many samples artists users have. Is it too much to come up with a melody yourself?”

One reason why sampling is important is that timbre is as important as rhythm or melody. That’s why they want a specific snare sound that appears at, like, the 1:12 second mark of a particular Curtis Mayfield sound. Do you honestly think that hip hop producers put all that time and energy into isolating breaks and sounds and constructing beats because they’re too lazy to learn how to play an insturment? Or to have guitar doing 16th notes that are all up-strokes?

Really, grab a copy of “Making Beats: The Art of Sample-Based Hip-Hop” and educate yourself a little. You don’t show how great your taste is by writing off other genres and showing us how limited your ear is.
