Joy Formidable - A Balloon Called Moaning Album Art

“Joy” is a good adjective for this London-via-Wales trio. Many of their songs build on waves of crashing guitar, each building and soaring until you feel giddy and overwhelmed. They opened for Passion Pit last year, and have a soon-to-be-stateside EP, A Balloon Called Moaning, out soon. We mentioned that BTW Brahms had remixed the band (previously they had their hands on Neon Indian’s “Psychic Chasms“), below you can hear their take on Joy Formidable’s “Whirring.” BRAHMS strip out the guitar to focus on vocalists Ritzy Bryan and Rhydian Dafydd, and the sped-up heartbeat rhythm catches the giddiness aspect of the band well.

The band returned to North Wales for their “Whirring” video. Though with names like Ritzy Bryan and Rhydian Dafydd, they couldn’t leave Wales behind if they tried:

A Balloon Called Moaning is out 5/4 via Black Bell, the new record label from Passion Pit’s Ayad Al Adhamy.
