Back in ’74, John Lennon and Harry Nilsson went on a bender forever known as “the lost weekend,” a stretch of months starring booze, drugs, and the bars of LA. To commemorate their debauchery, Harry and John set a mix of originals and covers to tape, with Harry singing and John on production. Nilsson blew out his voice during the sessions, and his ruptured cords led many to dismiss the effort; years on, it’s gained in stature, and The Walkmen deem it a “band favorite.”
And so Hamilton & Co. recorded an affectionate, song-for-song cover of the album, calling it the “great ‘buddy’ record of the seventies.” Leithauser’s boozy croon is a good fit for blown-out Nilsson, and the record is worth a listen for “Many Rivers To Cross” alone. Hear it for yourself at the Pussy Cats listening party.
“Pussy Cats” Starring The Walkmen comes with a 20-minute, psychadelic, making-of-the-record documentary and some pretty weird cover art. And dontcha know it, we have a copy to give away.

Here are our Pussy-giveaway winner’s spoils:
The Walkmen – “Pussy Cats” Starring The Walkmen
Harry Nilsson / John Lennon – Original, out-of-print Pussy Cats
The Walkmen – A Hundred Miles Off
The Walkmen limited edition numbered silkscreened poster
And second place gets … nothing! It’s winner-take-all. To enter the Pussy Cats Giveaway, post a comment telling us what’s attractive about the prize albums (or about Hamilton’s caveman-in-furs getup). We’ll randomly select a winner on Tuesday 10/31 at 6PM EST.
“Pussy Cats” Starring The Walkmen is out 10/24.

lenon, the Walkmen…
it’s like christmas!
I bake pies. I also cook, clean, and do laundry. I do all of this naked to music. If I won I could do this while listening to two amazing albums. You don’t want to crush a girl’s dreams do you? I didn’t think so.
I can use both albums as the music I rape to, replacing the Garden State soundtrack. Now those being raped will think that their rapist is a really hip cat.
It’ll be attractive when 2 great records are in both of my hands.
the fruit of the loom boy. that’s what sells it!
I want to win something that doesn’t require me living in NYC for once! yeeee!
So, I would have to say that I only wish I could find a portable-keyboard that sounded just like the Walkmen’s crazy-ass piano.
I’ve never heard the original, and probably never will………..or will I? The prize package would allow this, as well as supply me with the new Walkmen album, of which I cannot afford, and the new Walkmen Pussycats album, of which I also cannot afford. Pretty beautiful, in my eyes.
your new song made my pussy cat jump. really.
Everything everybody else said, PLUS
“Hamilton’s caveman-in-furs getup”
is the exact image i needed for
my quiet evenings at home
fantasizing of hot caveman love
while masturbating to
the dulcet tones of the walkmen.
so thanks.
i like the non-chalance
The Walkmen have new music. The cover proves its existence… what more could you ask for, Quentin Stoltzfus dressed as a broccoli?

How can you not love famous rock stars indulging in excess just because they’re geniuses and they can! And how can you not love big, furry cavemen? And let’s face it – it’s a lot more fun to make a record when there’s an extraneous double-digit number of people contributing in any odd number of ways… (a(a)
Sounds like a concept album so easy that a caveman could do it, hence the caveman get-up.
Nilsson + Walkmen= pure pop bliss.
True story… Harry Nilsson punched my father in the face once for “steppin on his rythim”. Pops never fully got over it. Plus, I try to have a “lost weekend” once a year in which I too dress in furs and scream until my vocal cords go haywire. God Bless the Walkmen for keeping the fun in music.
the album cover for the walkmen on pussycats is what you get when you have comercial stars in between jobs, making music in their room while they await the next fruit of the loom comercial or aflack insurance one to pay for their nice flat.
Right now my bedroom walls are decorated with: 1 poster of some Australian film which wasn’t particularly good; 1 piece of wrapping paper (flattened) with an outdated world map on it; 2 film stubs; and approximately 13 photographs. Hence, the prospect of winning a decent silkscreened poster is very, very attractive. And this band fucking rule.
New medical research suggests that the consumption of lycopene – the stuff that makes tomatoes red – may prevent cancer.
Omer Kucuk, M.D., oncologist at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, has produced the first scientific evidence to indicate that a lycopene supplement containing tomato extract may protect against prostate cancer. The study is being presented today at the 90th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) in Philadelphia.
In the study, Dr. Kucuk and colleagues followed 30 men with localized prostate cancer who were scheduled to undergo surgical removal of the prostate. For three weeks prior to surgery, study participants were randomly assigned to receive either a 15-milligram capsule of lycopene as a pure tomato extract, twice daily, or no intervention. Following removal of the prostates, the glands were analyzed to determine whether there were any differences between the two groups studied.
The investigators found that the group treated with lycopene supplements had smaller tumors, the cancer was more frequently confined to the prostate, meaning the cancer did not spread to surrounding tissue and organs. Levels of serum PSA (prostate specific antigen, a common marker used to detect prostate cancer) actually declined during the 3-week span that participants took the lycopene supplement. In addition, the tumors in participants who consumed lycopene showed signs of regression and decreased malignancy.
gosh, I just like it when people give me things. It’s really nice. Oh, and the band. I like them too.
hmm most attractive….yeah its gotta be the giant tomato.
hmm most attractive….yeah its gotta be the giant tomato.
whats attractive about this package is how i dont have any of these cds which i really want to own and the fact that there is much blank space on my white wall for a sweet walkmen silkscreen poster.
not to mention to rub it in everyones face. that would be attractive.
k-fed would pick me, i dont know about you guys…
i hear Bows + Arrows was what inspired him to create the soothing melodies of “PopoZao”.
cheers.
Brilliant and exciting idea!
Like mentioned up above, “it’s a celebration of rock ‘n’ roll, good friends, stiff drinks and excessive instrumentation”.
Definitley something I’m proud to hear the Walkmen taking part of, and it turned out great!
Kudos, fellas.
See ya around
-Chris
gimme
that fact that the Walkmen filled out their sound with their musician friends and that they mean it as a tribute is really awesome. that makes it attractive!
it would also be great to make a remix using the two, somehow. idk mixmasters report to the dance floor.
Well. My band has been kicking around Wisconsin for a year now, and Thursday is one of our first big shows, opening for Alan Sparhawk side project The Retribution Choir. Everybody is very excited. Today, I badly broke my right (and dominant) arm, leaving me unable to write, type quickly, masturbate quickly or play bass. It’s been a shitty day, and I am owed this prize package.
Well, Harry Nilsson is one of the best recording artists of all time and it’s a fuckin shame that Pussycats has gone widely underappreciated, especially when Harry was still alive. And The Walkmen fucking rule and I’m in love with what they have done with Pussycats. It’s wonderful and I’m ecstatic that there are great things like this that happen every once in a while. I feel like I’m Woody Allen and Marshall McLuhan has just popped out and validated my argument.
Holy crap! This lisy of comments is as long as my arm! By the time anyone gets down here, who cares what anyone thinks about when it comes to what I find attractive!
That said, the mention of recordings that reference “pussy” and do not involve Howie Day is infinitely attractive.
Howie Day is, need I spell it out, not a “cat”.
DwD
I find both albums attractive simply due to the concept. That freeform fun sort of vibe is apparent between the origin of the original recording and the idea of the Walkmen’s take on it.
If only more bands and musicians had the willingness to explore whilst taking massive amounts of enjoyment out of a fun, yet strong in a musical sense, recording process.
My email isn’t showing up somehow in my comment above so I’m reposting here. I don’t want that to hurt my chance of winning so I’m hoping this repost works. I would buy the new Walkmen Pussycats but if I’m going to get a poster and original OOP Pussycats I have to win it…my remastered copy doesn’t have that artwork and I would love to have it.
the bassist/keyboardist as strawberry. the lennon as girl doll. frumpiness abounds. that’s attractive-esque.
Everything is attractive if it involves the Walkmen! The furs are sexy and makes me wish I were a cavewoman, I would let him drag me by my hair any day.
Great job guys!
Anything from the walkmen is attractive! I love the furs, they are sexy and make me want to be a cavewoman so I can be dragged by my hair by him!
Keep up the goodwork guys!!
Love,
Denise
I love guys dressed as fruit!!
The reason this prize is so attractive is because I can hang a poster of the walkmen on my wall while listening to either copy of pussycats. The downside is choosing between which version to play. But yeah, all in all pretty damn attractive.
ooooo, a Pussycats album! Um, can we say “to die for”? Yay, The Walkmen (one of the few bands I’ve seen live that doesn’t sound like crap compared to their real cds?), what more could a girl ask for? Together, this is just an all out musical orgasm. I love that the Walkmen covered not only a song but the whole album itself. I?ve heard of this album but have never given it a listen before, but now I?m dying to. John Lennon is my hero and is a true musical genius. What?s up with the covers? I’m in love with both of them. To me it looks like the original album?s cover is two kids playing house: hubby at the table and wifey holding a … comb (I hope she?s brushing out his hair with that comb and not getting ready to stab out his ear or something). While The Walkmen?s cover looks like today?s dysfunctional family: The Caveman daddy, the ugly haired wife, the fruity son, the ape son, and the too depressed to get dressed emo child. Ha, gotta love it.
whats attractive is the out of print pussy cats itssa gonna be sweeet.
I want the print, hanging in my room for xmas please. also, nilsson is the man and deserves more recognition. maybe the walkmen will help to show a younger generation who this late great was.
… i would love to be choosen because i had a past life experience from the very first seconds of the very first song i have every heard from them. the song was ‘we’ve been had’ and i remember that i was driving down santa monica road just crossing vine street in hollywood when i heard it and went back to a past life when i was a little girl in paris and i was looking at a marry-go-round. i was wearing a little dress and it was night time and the marry-go-round was all lite up. i had almost drifted into the other on coming lanes because i was looking at these mental pictures of back then. it was one of the most beauitful experiences of my life, and for that i have the walkmen to thank.
John Lennon was an attractive man, and thus, attractive albums.
Whats attractive?
its my perfect line up the walkmen and lennon + maybe the walkmen will get the recognition they deserve.

I like a band that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The Walkmen have fun out there, and it shows.

Cover of Dylan’s Subterranean is a delicious treat
I once had a transcendental experience while listening to Jimmy Cliff’s original Many Rivers To Cross and walking across a bridge. The song began as I stepped onto the bridge and ended just as I left it. No lie.
To hear a favorite tune covered by some of my favorite artists old and new is extremely attractive (perhaps even sexy).
I think this package is attractive because it is supercool. I, also, am supercool. Coupled together, the world may freeze. Then again, maybe this isn’t the best idea.
Yes, Pussy Cats is about John and Harry. However, don’t forget, Ringo was also on this album. Which is why Hamilton is wearing that great caveman outfit. He’s paying homage to Ringo’s movie, Caveman. How can you not like that movie?!
lennon look good in drag!
gotta be in it to win it, I suppose..Attractive or not, I WANT IT..Nice to see Nilsson get some attention, and lost weekends/weeks are my specialty, usually followed by a debilitating alcohol withdrawal induced period of depression–this is just the stuff to listen to to get me through the next one!
I’ve never heard the original, but I like buddy movies. Walkmen + Lennon + Nilson = Crazy Delicious.
their attractiveness is their willingness to be unattractive

The prize is attractive because I squirted a bit while reading about it.
their attractiveness is their willingness to be unattractive
Upon seeing the furry get-up, I thought breifly that you would now be referred to the band formerly known as the Walkmen, but soon to be referred to as the Cavemen.
wahoo!!
Could be useful in my own weeks of debauchery and laziness. Also, Walkmen are originally from D.C., so that’s good.
God damn I love you guys and this has just made me love you even more. I would so like to win this it would make me the happiest man in Liverpool.

What’s attractive? The original Pussy Cats is out of fucking print and my bootleg of it sucks.
The Walkmen are pretty cool too.

Is this the Dirty Harry DVD box? I want it!
The drug induced nature of Harry Nilsson’s Pussycats is attractive. As is John Lennon without Yoko. What better way for the Walkmen to take it easy than cover the children’s song “Loop de Loop” with a bunch of their friends singing in the background. “We’re having a party, everyone’s having a good time yeah!”

No Yoko. Plus Walkmen singing “Loop De Loop” in trippy outfits.
Remakes of remakes are both a commentary and byproduct of our post-modern society. This album is a tribute to the old school notion of an album. I love the Walkemen so much that I ordered Bows & Arrow from Amazon and had it delivered to me in Madagascar (yes, the island off the southeast coast of Africa). Pick me! Pick me!

The most attractive attribute is that they are deliciously flat. Also, thanks to all the multiple posters, I believe my chances of winning are roughly one in seven.
ahhh those look so good, if i dont win those im preordering it for sure
Hello mr Walkman,
who’s this John guy? no heard of him… the rest sounds quite reasonable though, so i thought i may as well give it a go.

pink skirts is fancy.

Nilsson Schmilsson
Walkmen Rock Man
Is that a mullet?
Hamilton looks like Fred Flinstone in that caveman outfit…. Where can i get one??
Nilsson and Lennon’s hats are the most attractive by far. No robe or loincloth can beat that.
“You’re a Friend of Mine” is the ultimate buddy “record”: Clemens, Browne, & Hannah you can’t go wrong. Who’s John Lennon again? Damn right!
the prize album is attractive to me, because i love the walkmen, but as i live in Norway, their albums are extremely hard to get!
finger puppets rule. and anything “out of print” or “limited edition” just tickles my fancy…

What’s with The Walkmen’s letterboxing and scratchy type as of late?
It is always attractive to heckle the Smothers Brothers, or any comedy team made up of brothers. (Watch your backs, Gallagher and Gallagher II.)

Nilsson -and indeed everyone else in my book-owe it all to Dylan. Who was it that said ‘Elvis freed your body but Dylan freed your mind ‘. Dylan paved the way for the Rolling stones -who had just done covers, he paved the way for the Beatles-who would never have got past the sickly-sweet-commercial ‘She loves you’.Dylan paved the way for Lennon and Nilsson with the more country inspired ‘John Wesley Harding’ and ‘Nashville Skyline’ albums-remember the heavily suggestive ‘Lay Lady Lay…’ His influence screams out in the music by Johnathan Richmond and the Modern Lovers, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, even Fad Gadget, and of course, The Walkmen.
Besides, who could forget such soul searching lyrics as-’everybody must get stoned’-no seriously, enjoy my personal faves-
Well, I’ve been to London and I’ve been to gay Paree
I’ve followed the river and I got to the sea
I’ve been down on the bottom of a world full of lies
I ain’t looking for nothing in anyone’s eyes
Sometimes my burden seems more than I can bear
It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there
I was born here and I’ll die here against my will
I know it looks like I’m moving, but I’m standing still
Every nerve in my body is so vacant and numb
I can’t even remember what it was
I came here to get away from
Don’t even hear a murmur of a prayer
It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there.
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don’t need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows.

I’d have a hard time calling the albums attractive because of their covers… so… been meaning to check out all of these albums, and if I win, you’d make that easier and cheaper!
Ruptured vocal cords sound friggin’ awesome!!
I love it when it happens to me, it’s like throwing my voice into they hands of chaos and letting it dictate my music.
I would love to have this CD set!!
The Nilsson record is attractive because John could have saved the vocals at any time, but he chose not to. That took a tremendous amount of humility.
