Today we’re giving away Andy Partridge’s new Fuzzy Warbles boxed set. The 9 CD collection, available via the XTC frontman’s Ape label, is cleverly packaged like a children’s stamp album. And it comes with stickers. (How Beck!) More deets via Amazon:

The Fuzzy Warbles Collectors Album brings together over 100 songs from XTC frontman Andy Partridge’s songwriting archive. Recorded over the years whilst Andy and XTC were signed to Virgin Records and later to the Idea and Ape labels, the material is spread across eight volumes featuring songs and alternate versions of many XTC favorites that never made it onto the respective final albums or never made the cut when the final tracklistings were decided. There are also songs Andy never got to complete that he’s re-visited and finished off especially for this Fuzzy Warbles series.

We’re really digging the Nonesuch and Skylarking demos (ever hear the skiffle version of “Dear God”?!), but there are dozens of songs that should have been on XTC albums. Like this one:

If you want to win this lovely Collectors Album, just post in the comments your favorite XTC song by Monday 11/20 at 6 PM EST. (If you get blocked by our newly uncooperative spam filter, don’t worry, we’ll be finding and publishing the legit comments before the contest ends.) As always, we’ll randomly pick a winner, who will be the envy of all his or her bookish new wave friends.

Good luck!

P.S. XTC’s infamous Paris ’82 performance, in which Andy’s on-stage breakdown results in the band never playing another concert…

  6. This comments thread is huge, so I doubt my chances are good here… But what the hey…

Even though people find the “fa-fa-ta-ta” chorus overly precious, I really like “Another Satelite”, especially how the band and Rundgren make the guitar line sound like a wave (of sorts).

“King For A Day”. I love everything Andy writes. But this Colin song stands out because it’s SO superior to everything else he’s written. Some days I can’t get my head around Colin writing this perfect gem. Other days I don’t think about it.

“helicopter” from drums and wires. the sound is so ahead of its time, it’s ridiculous.

No question – “The Meeting Place” from Skylarking. That song for some reason practically changed my life. The old saying should not be “Dear God…” but “Dear Andy Partridge…”

    “The Meeting Place” from Skylarking

  43. Mike M  |   Posted on Nov 6th, 2006

“25 O’Clock,” but that was as Dukes of the Stratospehear, don’t know if that counts.

Actual XTC would have to be “Man Who Sailed Around His Soul.”

    Ball and Chain

  48. Another Dan  |   Posted on Nov 6th, 2006

Who know there were this many XTC fans! My favorite obscure track, “Roads Girdle The Globe”. My favorite Dukes of the Stratosphear: “The Mole From the Ministry” where they channel the Beatles circa Magical Mystery Tour. Thanks for asking.

I probably have a better chance of winning this than the other contests as of late. Unless Sofia Coppola makes a movie in the next week and douses it with XTC, of course.

I can’t believe someone said “Pink Thing” is their least favorite; it’s one of the all-time ten best songs about a penis. Ever.

  62. anose  |   Posted on Nov 7th, 2006

I’m a big “Senses Working Overtime” fan. Really, anything from English Settlement.

  63. A. Diggity  |   Posted on Nov 7th, 2006

  64. Super, SuperGirl off of Skylarking. love the guitar solo in that song. :)

    Life Begins at the Hop!

  66. My fave XTC track is “Lounger.” What? Oh, right. That’s Dogs Die in Hot Cars. Not XTC. And not “Senses Working Overtime.”

In a pinch, I’d pick “Dear God” as my favorite.

Great to see so much love for “Mayor of Simpleton”, being that it’s my personal fave as well. Anytime I make a mixtape for someone who hasn’t heard of XTC, I always use that as my ‘go 2′ song. It’s got everything that’s great about them as a band all in 3 1/2 minutes-insanely catchy melody, great hook(s), ringing guitars and lyrics Macca would give his eye teeth for. It’s great to have these demos etc. see the light of day, but I’ve got to wonder when their next record is ever going to come out.

  73. ollie  |   Posted on Nov 8th, 2006

    1. 2. 3. 4. 5… SENSES WORKING OVERTIME.

  74. Dave  |   Posted on Nov 8th, 2006

Maybe it’s a generic choice, but “Dear God”. It still gives me chills.

  75. fuvmapoppin  |   Posted on Nov 8th, 2006

“Love on a Farmboy’s Wages” is one of the more perfectly assembled songs I’ve ever heard.

  76. david74  |   Posted on Nov 8th, 2006

mayor of simpleton for me too

  77. Peter  |   Posted on Nov 9th, 2006

Yeah, I know everyone’s picking it but I’m gonna have to go with “Senses Working Overtime”.

  78. I love all of XTC’s songs, but Skylarking was what sucked me in to their fandom. Then, after digesting all of their other albums, I learned of the re-issued Skylarking CD that put a cut song back onto the tracklist in addition to “Oh God.” And that added track was the last new song I’ve heard from them.

Therefore, “Mermaid Smiled” is my favorite song by XTC.

“Chalkhills And Children” from Oranges and Lemons.
It ended up on more mix tapes than any other XTC song and every single time I got asked what it was and where people could get it.
Plus its an Andy song and Andy is so much better than Colin….
