As far as the bedroom ambient thing goes, Memory Tapes and Tanlines are members of the old guard, dudes who started out in rock bands “way back,” and eventually found themselves behind a bed of electronics. (See, for instance, James Murphy.) You have your “chillwave” neophytes like Toro Y Moi, Washed Out, and the just-posted Teengirl Fantasy, but Tanlines’ Jesse Cohen cut his teeth in Professor Murder, Eric Emm, Don Caballero and Storm & Stress. For his part, Memory Tapes, aka Dayve Hawk, is forever linked to Hail Social, for better/worse.
