Our next installment of This Week In Covers comes from LA alt-rock band Rock Kills Kid, who tackle Spoon’s “I Turn My Camera On.” The cut comes from the latest edition of The OC Mix, which is a collection of covers by everyone from Pinback to Band Of Horses. RKK’s take on the Spoon tune isn’t as spiky as the original; in fact it’s downright slick.

Whaddaya think? Shades of The Exies? Or shades of something cool we haven’t even thought of yet? Is Britt calling to congratulate — or to call ‘em out? You can hear clips from the rest of the Mix here.

And what the fuck is up with The OC? Is anyone still watching? Well, we are. But is anyone else pathetic enough? Last episode may have been a slight rebound, and Taylor’s character may be growing on us, but the best thing about the show these days is the music — and some of you may even debate that. (Did anyone else notice that they didn’t say Marissa’s name once while talking about her the whole time last week? Sorta cool.) But stacked against tonight’s super-sized The Office and 30 Rock? They’re up a creek.

It’s definitely not as amazingly awesome as the original, but I will give them this: They did a cover song the way they are meant to be done.

    I like.

  2. I liked it too, you can here samples of the other songs here: http://www.musicfromtheoc.com/

whoo the rkk track is good! :-)

  4. Oh that has got to be the worst cover since Willie Nelson tackled Leonard Cohen.

But I have to agree with Nick, this is the way covers are meant to be, you’re supposed to do your own thing with it. So, I congratulate them on that.

  5. I hate myself for saying this but Lady Sovereign covering the Sex Pistols may be my new guiltiest of guilty pleasures.

…right after Seth and Summer breaking up (you know they SO are)

It’s not a bad cover, though it pales next to the Prince-tastic original.

Nothing outside of vintage Shatner covers (eg: Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds) will ever be as bad as that crime against the Talking Heads.

  7. Huge Spoon fan that I am, I have to side with the original, The RKK is still cool, though. I agree that it’s a hell of a lot better than covers that just mimic the original. Nothing pisses me off more than a shit band imitating a song a love.

I just think boring bands should stop making boring covers of great, spastic, crazy great songs. I saw make it crazier. Let’s get Ex Models or Polysics to cover this istead. I’m yawning, and are they sampling Spoon in the “Keep on….” parts? That’s pretty lame if they are.

yeah, that was pretty boring. “I turn my camera on” was one of the songs that turned me onto spoon and remains a favorite, and that didn’t do it justice.
it wasn’t horrible, I suppose, for a cover.
