Navigating NYC during the last hours of the year is always a nightmare, but this year we’ve got just the fix: Go see Clap Your Hands’ 12/31 show at Hammerstein Ballroom! Stereogum’s proud to co-present the show with Alec and the guys (and Bob Mould’s opening!); the new stuff won’t leave our heads, and CYHSY’s evolving into a bona fide beast on stage. Plus, it’s a warm place to be with good music, good tunes, and real people (not to get all Almost Famous on ya). And not only are we psyched that we now have New Year’s plans, but we’re inviting ten of you to join us! It’s the stuff indie-rock dreams are made of.
So we have five pairs of tickets to giveaway, and we’re gonna do it like always; to enter the contest, post a comment telling us (1) how you discovered the Clap (we blogged them before PFork, of course, but it’s cool if that’s where you found ‘em) and (2) naming your favorite tune. We’ll pick five winners at random on Wednesday 12/27 at 6PM EST, and the ten of you will have a solid story for the back-to-work NYE watercooler conversation. Here’s to ringing in the Oh-Seven! Good luck.

Not to nitpick, but I think you should mention the Bob Mould Band is opening up.
I first discovered CYHSY when one of my friends made a mix with “Over and Over Again” on it. I was hooked after two spins, and it’s still my favorite track
the name intrigued me.
favorite song: undoubtedly “the skin of my yellow country teeth” although i’m really digging “underwater (you and me)” as well…
a friend picked me up in her car, put on the clap your hands album and i thought it was the best/worst thing i had ever heard. that’s why i love them. how can something be so awful and amazing at once?
favorite song: let the cool goddess rust.
i’m stuck in a holiday inn in denver, co, trying to get back to kansas city. lucky for me a blizzard suspended all air traffic, so you can find me at the hotel bar or in my room checking stereogum and digg every 10 seconds.
anyway, i think i first heard of clap your hands on pitchfork. i checked out their website, downloaded everything i could find and bought their cd. favorite song has to be yellow country teeth. that keyboard in the beginning is just too good.
I first heard of CYHSY through Stereogum. I had gotten the cd, and grown to really like it, but I didn’t know I loved CYHSY until Coachella 06′ when they played The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth. A euphoric feel swept across the audience for that song, as everyone sang along with what they thought Alec was singing. Like Maps is the genre defining love song, I think The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth is the genre defining leaving home song.
one of my co-workers played it in the office, then another co-worker complained about his voice.. unfortunately, i didn’t speak up in support of the band.. i’m relatively new to the job, don’t need to rock the boat just yet.. but soon.. soon.
bottled up to explode.
Heard about them from you guys.
Favorite Song: Tidal Wave
Caught a bad case of the Clap early this year from a friend. These tickets would really help my treatments. “The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth” is my favorite song.
I’m pretty sure it was PFork’s name checking review that got me intrigued. When I first heard Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood it reminded me of the first time I met my crazy drummer. He kept calling everyone young blood and it was funny. So I guess that’s my favorite tune.
heard about them thru the magic of the internets. namely pitchfork. bought CD and tickets for their bowery show, much joy and happiness ensued.
favorite song: gimme some salt.
i saw them open up for The National, Fall of 04 and bought the cd at the merch booth.
favorite song = ‘Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood’.
How you can you read a line like this from Pitchfork and not run out and buy the CD?
A band that mashes together Talking Heads and Neutral Milk Hotel while also stopping in to visit the shimmering, wafting ambiance of Yo La Tengo, the harmonic trickery of Modest Mouse, and the chorused guitarwork of pre-Loveless My Bloody Valentine? What website do you think this is? We are fucking there.
And that’s exactly what I did ordered the CD immediately from Insound. My favorite song was originally “Upon this Tidal Wave of Young Blood”, then it was “In this Home on Ice”, but now over a year later, its “The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth”.
I heard about CYHSY through my friend Dan. He was obsessed. I soon followed in his footsteps.
Favorite Song: Over and Over Again
Heard about CHYSY through the Pitchfork review. I was skeptical, but Alec’s voice grew on me the same way David Byrne’s did.
Fave song: Cool Goddess
I found CYHSY in the giveaway bin of my college’s radio station. I rescued it from oblivion, and if you listen long enough, you might hear it on rotation.
I bought their cd at Other Music after reading the P-Fork review. What would Aziz Ansari say about that?
My fave track: In This Home on Ice
Heard about them from a co-worker and the name + the graffiti intrigued me. Got to see them at the bad Earl in atl where the enthusiastic crowd made Heavy Metal my new favorite tune.

mundanely enough, i first heard of CYHSY from pitchfork.

Oops, college radio rescue entry part 2.
Gimmie Some Salt is the top of my pops.
My friend Greggles who lives in Melbourne sent me the album and said it was good stuff. Funny because I live in New York and probably should have known about this before my Australian friend did. And but so, I liked the album immediately, though felt that it was a bit on the talking heads rip off side of things for a while before the tunes really began to take hold of me. yellow country teeth is obvious, but also the best tune on that disc, i think.
My coworker popped it in one day right after the album came out. I was shocked at how interesting it was and how weird it was.
Favorite tune: “Clap Your Hands!”
A friend burned me a copy of the CD but I can’t remember if it was before or after they started appearing on the cover of Time Out NY every week.
The Skin of my Yellow Country teeth is my favorite, hands down.
I CYHSY! at Gothamist Moveable hype June of 05.
My favorite track of theirs is “home on ice”.
thanks
i first heard cyhsy from a friend. i bought the cd and listened to it non-stop on a spring trip to nyc. every day we walked around the city i had cyhsy in my head or playing on my ipod. after that trip i couldn’t listen to cyhsy without thinking of nyc. it was so great, the association. seriously, i listen to their cd and it makes me want to pack my bags and move to brooklyn or something. they’ve become the quintessential “nyc” music, in my mind. as it turns out, i am going to nyc for new years. its quite the coincidence, although when my friend pitched me the idea of going to new york for new year’s, i DID have the new CYHSY songs playing and I thought it was some sort of divine intervention. thats my story.
p.s. my favorite song is let the cool goddess rust away. sorry about that.
First heard of CYHSY on WOXY.COM. Wore the CD out listening to it the whole way to Pitchfork’s Intonation fest in Chicago that summer. Aaaand, my favorite would be skin of my yellow country teeth.
was ‘dragged’ to a show at the TLA. blown away by alec’s hat, general coolness of the band. and the songs, of course, for an unsigned band.
favorite song: is this love?
I’ve been into CYHSY since right around the blog explosion. Looking forward to the new album. Didn’t buy tickets to the New Years show because my wife would kill me if I left her home. Winning tix however…
Favorite song, “In This Home On Ice”
seeing that painted wall in williamsburg while driving my friend’s car after hearing about them on a blog and putting two and two together. then i saw them for free during the summer at South Street Seaport with Devotchka and they really blew me away.
favorite: Heavy Metal
Saw them play an early show at a friends studio ’round the corner from Pete’s Candy Store. Turned out those guys had all gone to my alma mater and the twins (Lee and Tyler) had played in a friends band called Mama and the FunBoys while in college! Loved Upon this Tidal Wave of young Blood immediately.
They were supposed to play a live show at UCLA, but our planning committee screwed up and forgot the speakers. They just stood around for a while getting pissed off before leaving. Picked up there CD the next day.
Through blogs like this one!
Fave: “In This Home On Ice”

Living in London last fall, it seemed the buzz was all about North American crossovers, like Wolf Parade and We are Scientists, but when my friend Marlow put on the slow-mo chain saw vibration that is the opening to “The Skin…” i found the beat that would carry me to class across clouded Islington. Seeing them at Coachella and Bonnaroo has been a pleasure. Too bad that while the Byrne comes through full force live, those pesky bent guitar notes are harder to come by.
Favorite song, hence, is the CD Maxi-single #1 TRL hit “The Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth”
Saw the cover of the first album and it reminded me of Shel Silverstein. I listened to it and decided that if Shel Silverstein played music, it would sound like this.

fave song: gimme some salt
My boyriend introduced them to me.
Favorite song: Yellow Country Teeth
I heard about them through magazines and blogs.
Fav tune is Heavy Metal
I first heard CYHSY listening to Left of Center on Sirius last fall/winter. By that time In This Home on Ice was on pretty frequent rotation, and I loved it. I originally disliked The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth, but it has grown on me with each listen and it’s now my favorite cut off the album.

First discovered them as one of the band members–don’t remember which one–was taking a shit in my stairwell.
I still love them.
Favorite song on the album is “Clap Your Hands.”
I like circus music.
I heard them for the first time when my friend played their free songs for me in a psychology laboratory after he did an experiment on me.
My favorite song is Satan Said Dance because of the line “i know this is not how you thought it would be, no whips, no chains, just dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing…”
I first heard about them from a friend who brought the CD along to a performance we had in Michigan.
Favorite Song: Is This Love?
I was trying in vain to kill an army of carpenter ants that had invaded the sill of my falling down barn in Poyntelle, Pennsylvania when the NPR story came on and they played some clips from the CD and I didn’t care anymore about the carpenter ants. I found their website – played the free songs a couple of zillion times and stopped worrying that the barn would fall down (it didn’t. Favorite Song: Details of the War
my ex-boyfriend blogged about them.
Fav song: The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth.

i heard about them from various sources, you, p4k, friends, it took me ages to actually listen to them, though. a friend put “upon this tidal wave of young blood” on a mixtape i immediately fell in love. i bought the cd and almost saw them a few months ago with architecture in helsinki, but my ride to2ly backed out, it was a bummer.
my favorite (as of today) is “is this love?”
I heard them from some boot leg tape, so I added them as friends on myspace..and here we are!

So, I first heard of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! when I was at Borders.
I was just walking around looking at the CDs and the CD cover stuck out to me.
I went home and listened to a few songs and immediately went back to Borders to buy it. :]
My favourite song would have to be Is This Love?
Listen first: Club underground, West hollywood California
Favorite song: Yellow country teeth
I accidently found your website, listened and liked. My favorite song is In This Home On Ice.
Alec went to my high school and grew up around the corner from me, so I heard about CYHSY from my mom. She told me, “I heard that Ounsworth boy has a band.” I said, “Which one.” She said, “Alec.” I said, “Matt was hot. Cool, I’ll check it out.”
Is that sad?
Is This Love? Fur sure.
I found at about Clap Your Hands listening to KCRW in LA. And I was like “who is this band, they ROCK!”
Have a few favorites but really like skin of yellow country teeth.
I accidently found your website, listened and liked. My favorite song is In This Home On Ice.

I found out about you guys when my best friend starting playing your cd in his bedroom.
“Catchy tune. Who is this?”
“Clap your hands say yeah.”
So I clapped my hands and said Yeah.
I started listening to you right after that, and I swear, I can’t get enough of you.
My family is going to NYC this year (My first time to NYC) from Christmas day, until Jan 2.
Seeing your show would be the most amazing way to spend my New Years in NYC!
My favorite song by you is Satan Said Dance.
It’s an amazing song..
Even if I can’t go to the show, I hope it goes great. You rock!

I discovered Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on iTunes. I believe it was from Ben Gibbard’s celeb playlist on there.
Favorite Tune: Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood
I found them surfing the internet one day. I read a review and really dug the name and had to listen. It turns out I had listened to them a few nights ealier at a friends out. I was glad to find out who they were. I think my favorite is “Heavy Metal” or “In This Home On Ice”, both very good and catchy. It’s hard to decide. I like all their songs. CYHSY really caught me most with the tambourine, my favorite instrument. They rock it!
i first got the Clap when i heard you on WXPN in Philadelphia last fall.
i fell in love the song “Over and Over Again (Lost and Found). now i must go have another listen.
XOXO
1st heard ‘em from a cd my friend gave me.

(have seen them thrice now. twice in philly, once in nyc, both hometowns)
fav song – upon this tidal wave of young blood.
I read about there Indie genius ability to make 8 dollars a album and they werent even signed.
Fav.Song would be Satan Say Dance
As a puppeteer, its important that I remain aggressive in the constant search for new and unique artistic mediums. Avant-garde in nature, its hard to find just the perfect music to go alongside my puppet shows. When I first heard Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I was visiting a new friend, a magician named Fenton. I was instantly drawn to them, they’ve become a wonderful source of inspiration. These tickets would kick ass… feeding my insatiable lust for CYHSY.
Favorite track: Over and Over Again (Lost and Found)
Heard of them: KEXP, Seattle.
Favorite song: “Is This Love?”
I had their cd for a while… picked it up after pitchfork recommended ‘em. but i never really got into them much until i saw them at sasquatch music festival. put on quite a show.
my favorite song has gotta be “over and over again”, but i dig the whole album.
I discovered Clap Your Hands Say Yeah in 1997, when I had a bad acid trip and went way indie clairvoyant for about 6 minutes. I knew they were coming, and anticipated their first album. When it came out, I listened to it a lot while I made out with my girlfriend, and also while I was hanging out with my buddies. My favorite song is The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth, both because that’s what I heard in ’97 when I was tripping, and also because its a fucking rad song.

I heard of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah when I was out with my brother. He bought the cd, and played it on the way home. It’s been love ever since. I’d appreciate the tickets, considering Clap Your Hands Say Yeah came to Toronto and I was insanely happy I could go.. only to find out that it was 19+. I later spent the night crying.
And my favourite song…. would have to be: Is This Love?
I first heard CYHSY on the jukebox at my favorite bar, Simon’s, in Chicago. The guitar on Yellow Country Teeth caught my attention. My favorite song is Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood.
I was trying to pick some music for a really important, dramatic scene in my first indie film, so i was scowering the globe to find something that matched. “lost and found” by clap your hands, was, and is that song; it meshed perfectly, and gave the mood of the scene just that extra little something to make it my favorite that i’ve ever shot and worked with. I think the actual discovery was through i-pod roulette on a drive from california to new york, my friend had “lost and found” downloaded from the website, and after hearing it I had to have the album.
Favorite song: details of the war… great emotio.
Favourite song “Upon this Tidal Wave of Young Blood” and I was first introduced to the band by Juston of the fabulous band Dr Dog talking about cool bands they had played with.
well i discovered clap your hands say yeah whennnn my mom was reading an article in some newspaper or magazine about them or that had something about them in it.
and it said they went to connecticut college, and she went there, so she read it.
and she asked me if i knew them and i had heard of them but had never really listened to them before simply because i never got to it.
so then i went out and bought the album and i fell in love and thats in the end.
favorite song = is this love. chorus bit is freaking genius.
I discovered clap your hands say yeah through the internet
as for my favorite song
i really love the song my yellow country teeth the best. i find myself singing and dancing all around when it comes on its so catchy. :]
Heard of them: KEXP, Seattle.
Favorite song: “Is This Love?”
I discovered CYHSY on one of my many searches for new inspiring sounds in ’05. Saw them linked with The National, and Dr. Dog (two other very brilliant bands) gave em a listen, and fell head over heals…full on, crimson n’ clover, over and over, I fall everytime I hear them. Still have never seen them, and I’ve been aching for the Clap for a long while. (Ohh Ho Ho)
My favorite tune? It’s between Heavy Metal, and Clap Your Hands!. Heavy Metal is a tune that perks you up, no matter how trivial things may be. Plus, you can’t deny the urge to shimmy n shake when it strikes on.
Clap Your Hands!, well, Im a sucker for hand claps in any song. Hand claps, and organs, and those lyrics with infinite meanings, or obvious ones.
Ok, I’ve made up my mind, it’s Clap Your Hands! That song is so stunning, and all round my taste.
i found clap your hands say yeah on the internet.
and they are amazing.
as for my favorite song it’d have to be yellow country teeth. i find myself singing and dancing all over whenever that song comes on. its so catchy.
I first heard them thanks to my friend Evan… he im’ed me and told me they were a necessity to check out.
Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth has always been my favorite, when I first saw the title it caught my attention, then on first (and each following) listen it remained my fav.
