Fol Chen The New December II Album Art

The first single from Fol Chen’s second album, “In Ruins,” had a fun, ’80s R&B vibe to my ears. “The Holograms” is more tightly wound, with a controlled female vocal following the piano melody closely. Like “In Ruins,” the drums are syncopated and pounding, a good contrast to the restrained vocals. The press release on Part II: The New December says “The Holograms” is about “the treachery of memory”; you’ll hear that in the song’s breakdown, where “I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten your name,” doesn’t sound like an apology at all.

If you like that grinding keyboard in the background, you can download it as a ringtone from Asthmatic Kitty
