Man, I am so torn. Call a track “Hot-N-Fun” and I understand it as an attempt to be a fresh summer jam. Have Nellie Furtado sing a verse and I understand it as an attempt to go straight into my PowerBook’s trash can. Tough stuff. As it stands, “Hot-N-Fun” isn’t quite as fun or interesting as its video (which is marginally fun and interesting, sort of a Fear And Loathing meets soft-porn cavegirls gone wild vibe), and definitely not as fun or interesting as the list of remixers Pharrell’s pulled on board for the extended-single release, including Hot Chip, Crookers, and Boys Noize, and this here jump-off from Yeasayer. All that said, the original’s typically N.E.R.D.- funk electro stomp isn’t bad for some mindless grinding at a summertime late night roof party; Yeasayer’s weirdo synths and polyrhythmic padding probably a little less so.
