Liz Phair released her first new album in almost five years on Saturday. She mentioned that she was working on a new record in an interview about her burgeoning TV/film scoring career, but the release — especially on a non-Tuesday, right before a holiday, and via her sparse website — is a huge surprise. Another huge surprise? Everything else about this record. Have a listen to “Bollywood,” a rapped story about signing a major label contract and becoming a TV/film composer, over tablas. Does that make sense? Not at all. And that’s the screenshot-made cover art below as well. She got to Friday, said, “Fuck it,” hit apple-shift-4, and grabbed a beer. Awesome:

To me, she is clearly making fun of MIA–the production, the delivery, the shitty cover–which is awesome. I don’t ever want to hear this again, but it’s awesome for that.
Ok, Liz had 2 really amazing records to start her career, BUT something happened in the mid-90′s. First it was a more polished production, then a vocoder (auto tune)! And for some reason she’s been marketed as some kind of “Cher” for the aging Alt. generation. Maybe its label pressure to be the next big cross over. Either way, Liz lost her way a long time ago and tho part of me wants her back, the new shit is a feeble attempt at recapturing her Rough Trade days. Sorry Liz! No biscuit!
