Before I knew Ezra Rubin’s DJ/production name was Kingdom I saw him spin at dozens of Brooklyn parties. Not typically my scene, but we had friends in common, and I found his all-out approach and personal style interesting. Fast forward half a dozen (or more) years and I’m really enjoying what he does on his Mind Reader EP. Again not my usual listening material, but Rubin’s densely layered, colorful bells-and-whistles aesthetic continues to engage. The video for the EP’s title track was put together by Kari Altmann. She and Rubin have worked together on “numerous live visuals and other graphic projects in the past.” Here the results add to the song’s dark, anthemic fractures.
The Mind Reader EP is out via Acéphale/Fool’s Gold. On 8/14, Kingdom’s DJing a MoMA PS1 Warm Up I put together: I’m expecting Rubin to transform that expansive courtyard into something resembling the back of a sweaty, scrubby Brooklyn bar half a decade ago.
