Whether he’s drawing or recording, most everything Chad VanGaalen does artistically is quick-engaging, left of center, and unique to his distinct mesh of influences. Here he lends his trademark brand of freehand drawing (which Ininiheart album owners shoudl know well) to touring juggernaut Guster for the clip to “Lightning Rod,” a sublimely sparse and melancholic track from last year’s Ganging Up On The Sun. Chad takes the tune through lots of shape shifting, image morphing, and perspective shifting, leaving us with absolutely no clue about what’s going down but loving it like a father loves his baby-cum-patricidal, lightening-spewing purple cloud.

No surprises that Guster’s on the road (with Mason Jennings), and we figure Chad will be ready to follow up Skelliconnection with an album culled from the 857 songs he wrote in his bedroom last year any day now.

Ganging Up On The Sun is available on Reprise.

i wonder how many nights a year guster thanks god that high school kids from new england have absolutely no taste in music and buy their records before graduating to ben folds and howie day.

  2. poignant song.

This just made me really nostalgic. I want to drive to the beach with a few friends. I hate winter.

beautiful video, fits the music perfectly! i’m more turned off by guster’s fans than their music. this is a great one.

gusters great. just as good as ben folds if not better. i agree the fans get sorta annoying but thats not the bands fault they just happen to appeal to anoying college girls. still great stuff. glad to see them posted on here not getting bashed.

I love this song. Is the whole album this good?

  7. I think the Guster bashing at the top was relevant a few years ago but this new album is really just a good record.

Here in LA it’s just starting to get picked up on radio by KCRW and Indie 103 and hopefully it will soon convince others that these guys have grown up since their days as Northeastern DMB-hand-me-downs.

Guster claimed Brian Wilson and The Kinks as influences before, but now on this album it finally is starting to show.

  8. I love Guster. I love this song. I HATE this video!!!

    To Brian,
The latest album really is a great one. I don’t know anything about their fanbase, I just heard a few clips in the summer and decided to get the album. Still listen to it on a regular basis. If you like smart, melancholy pop, you’ll enjoy it.

chad vangaalen is the shit, and I am beginning to wonder, “do all epic recording artists that haven’t been recognized by the majority of the population hang out together?”

because, I am beginning to think that they do.

Jack is an absolute idiot…Howie Day?…Ben Folds?…yeah they are good but come on now. Guster writes amazing music that has meaning, all Howie Day writes about it girls, important but after a while it gets old

Love this — perfectly inexplicable and perfectly in line with Guster’s feel.

I wonder how many nights a year Jack thanks God that the music industry has complete control over his tastes so he doesn’t have to make his own decisions. Graduating from Guster to Howie Day? Please, more like trading in your harley for a tricycle.

jack, you are an idiot and have no idea what you are talking about. Your opinion is worthless beacuse you put howie day on the same level as ben folds. So please dont ever express your thoughts ever again.
