Governors Island is a magical place built for art, installations, bike rides, and marriage proposals. The New York Times has done a profile, followup, and critical discussion piece on the place this summer, but the best way to experience it is take the five-minute ferry from the South Street over to the isle and let it hold sway. Saturday night it hosted a free show, one in the “Gone To Governors” series sponsored by Converse, headlined and curated by Neon Indian with a bill featuring DOM (who’ve never sounded bigger), Miniature Tigers, Nite Jewel, Com Truise (DJing), and Prefuse 73. The latter set was a freaky, full-band set that featured warped electonicisms a bit too heady for some of the crowd, but an undeniable highlight of the night. Other highlights: Neon Indian welcoming Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster for a live recreation of their remix of ARS’s “Another Likely Story”, and the Palomo crew’s live debut of their cover of Paul McCartney’s “Temporary Secretary,” with keyboardist (and BTW Fight Bite mainstay) Leanne Macomber manning Macca duties on bass guitar. Wish there was video of either/both; instead there is the original MP3 of N.I.’s ARS remix, and this set of photos by Bek Andersen.
