A couple of the best advances in the recent trend toward band reformation come thanks to Lou Barlow, setting aside well-documented differences with both Eric Gaffney and J. Mascis to breathe some vitality into the beloved bands Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr. But add this to The Police, Genesis, and a host of others, and this rash of reunions tips off the question: For these legends, why now? Lou’s Blackberry may just hold the answer. He spoke with The Mercury News (via LHB):

Barlow, now 40, credits e-mail with allowing both bands to get past their beefs of the snail-mail era.

“E-mail has a way of eliminating the real problems,’” he says. “Even with J. Mascis, if something really comes down, it’s easy to solve stuff in e-mails with two lines in them. . . . Whereas for some reason it’s just impossible when you’re in a practice space or you’re just hanging around.’”

We know things have gone to shit, David, but may as well give eddie@vanhalen.com a shot. Who knows! Anyway, here’s an MP3 of the awesome track “Been There All The Time,” from Dinosaur Jr’s forthcoming Beyond, previously enjoyable only via MySpace stream.

Dinosaur Jr – “Been There All The Time” (MP3)

We’re dying to hear the rest of the record! Anybody have?

The new Dino Jr is a scorcher. Send me an email if you need help finding it, Stereogum.

Astounding album — album sounds like its from an early 90′s time capsule. Maybe this will remind rock bands how its done. Rather than be convoluted like the majority of fraggin’ bands/musicians around (riding a hype enema or not) at the moment. “Grinderman” & “Beyond” have already made 2007 a classic for me so far.

That Lou song “Back to your Heart” is pretty rad too.

Also, it’s awesome in the second or third song when J says “… yur living all over me”

  6. i’ll agree with the already stated sentiments and say it’s pretty rad. if you’re like me, in your early thirties and grew up worshiping dino jr, you’ll be very happy with the results. i’m terriblw with song names but the second and sixth tracks kill and track four that lou sings is really great too.

Why don’t you stop pretending it hasn’t leaked Stereogum and post the frickin’ watercooler on it already?

  8. I know it leaked ages ago but honestly haven’t tracked it down yet! Torture.

  9. Man, I saw Dinosaur jr. last year on their tour and didn’t think it was that great but this new song is pretty good.
