Stereofave Laura Veirs has put the finishing touches on her third record for Nonesuch and the first track, recorded in Johnny and June Carter Cash’s Tennessee cabin studio, is a gem. Producer/bandmate Tucker Martine (The Decemberists) keeps it spacious, building around Laura’s delicate, earnest vox with spare acoustic picking, fiddle, hand claps and jazz legend (and labelmate) Bill Frisell’s subtle guitar lines. The first accoutrement of note is Laura’s call-and-response with the eight-voice Cedar Hill Choir (triple tracked!), a choice possibly informed by that French children’s choir’s arrangements of her tunes. Regardless, it’s decidedly Sufjan-y (Soof-y? Sufi?), another notch in their branch of mutual admiration. You must download.
Saltbreakers is out 4/10 on Nonesuch.
