“Black Gold” is oil (or coal) as well as a song by Athens, Ohio’s Southeast Engine from their fourth album From The Forest To The Sea. We’re told the album was recorded live to analog tape in “a forsaken, 1800s middle school auditorium in the hills of Stewart, Ohio — June 9-13.” The “Black Gold” video, directed by Thomas R. Britt finds the guys dealing suspicious bags, donning gas masks, and affixing a visual narrative to Adam Remnant’s lyrics about factories, masks, the US of A, the thought that “man kills the things he loves / to prove himself to be above / the very things he depends upon,” and, yes, black gold.
