U2′s new vid (directed by Alex Courtes, who also did “Vertigo”) finds the band performing in outer space, shrunken in front of a skull, candy apples. clenched fists, a ceramic Aphrodite bust, and the Virgin Mary draped in an American flag. It’s Bono’s garage sale obviously, though he probably didn’t sell anything on account of the bomb explosions. We also see a sexy lady cop, in sexy boots and an unsexy fake mustache. There’s a lot going on, you may need to watch it twice. Coolest effect: during the bridge when the lens cracks every time Larry hits the snare. Mr. Edge explained it all to Hot Press earlier this week: “It’s based around the idea that men have fucked things up so badly, politically, economically and socially that it’s really time we handed things over to women. We had our doubts when we saw a rough cut – but the finished video is brilliant. He’s really nailed it.”

No Line On The Horizon is out 2/27 on Interscope.

    • zed  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

yeah ’cause u2 are *totally* the ones who have done the borrowing in that relationship. lolz. get a clue.

      • Syd  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

Radiohead don’t sound anything like U2 you ignorant fucking plebeian. Anyone who says “lolz” needs to be dragged out to the backyard and shot.

        • zed  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

your ignorance is bliss for you i’m sure. what were you born in 1994?

          • Syd  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

You’re so young and naive you use phrases like “lolz,” and you’re asking ME if I was born in 1994? You’ve never even heard of all the bands U2 have ripped off. I think you should go back to suckling your fat mother’s teet and leave the internet to the adults.

          • bkennedy  |   Posted on Feb 10th, 2009 0

Syd… I would beat your ass into the pavement if I ever saw you. I’m not even addressing whether you’re right or not, you are an abusive little prick who spews venom because of your own low self-esteem. Don’t bother arguing, everybody can see it just from your pissy comments – and I don’t mean the merits of your arguments, but rather the way you feel empowered to treat your fellow human beings. Fix your own issues, you don’t have the right to spew on other people, you hateful contemptible little toad.

        • Syd, Remember in the 80′s when U2 invented modern rock? Probably not.

          • Syd  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

“Invented modern rock.” Hahahah! Just further proof that all U2 fans are inbred idiots.

First of all you’re too ignorant to know about bands like The Clash and The Boomtown Rats, both of whom U2 ripped off extensively.

Secondly if it’s from the 1980s it’s 25 years old and CLASSIC, not MODERN.

U2 are 3 chord wonders and the most overrated hacks on the planet.

          • bobgeldof  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2009 0

Your inability to respond to others without using insults is an interesting sign of your intelligence. No, U2 did not invent modern rock, far from it.

However, from Unforgettable Fire up through Zooropa they were at a creative peak that has influenced bands such as Elbow and Radiohead heavily, and both of those bands not only admit it, but also cite U2 as a major influence. This is a simple and undeniable fact. Whether you are willing to accept it or not does not make it any less true.

            That is all.

          • idunno  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2009 0

dude, as a dubliner, to say u2 copied the boomtown rats is laughable. geldof is the hack. granted bono’s much more annoying but he definitely did not copy geldof.

        • Art  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

Have you not heard “Stop Listening” or “Let Down”?

  3. kellycop  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

Everybody wants to sound like Bono and Bono want to sound like Scott Weiland

  4. roscoe  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

    … seriously.

i really, genuinely hate this band. this is so fucking lame. embarrassing.

    • Coltrane  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

i really, genuinely hate pointless, annoying geekbitch comments like yours. this is so fucking lame. embarrassing.

go back to hating your life and leave criticism for those with pubes.

  8. not a fan of this song or video… but its amazing how this band has managed to stay relevant for over 20 years. i cant hate on that

  9. d@ve  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

this song sucks but i’m sure theyll have a few songs ill like on the album

  10. Greg  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

It’s like they’re trying to relive their Auchtung Baby days, and failing.

  11. great video. it reminds me of Oasis’ “The Shock of The Lightning” video. Very trippy psychedelic

  12. Bono doesn’t want to be Bono anymore

  13. zed  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

er … this is a leaked rough cut and NOT the finished official video, FYI

and the imagery here is fucking amazing, anyone who can’t see that is blind.

  14. HS  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

Great video, great band. Took me awhile to get used to the new sound, but I like it. I can’t wait for the album. U2 knows how to stay relevant through the years.

  15. Ok, yeah so this is one of those bad U2 albums that we get every so often.

Yay, even more reason to slag Bono off!

  16. ohpleez  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

U2 is getting dangerously close to the Rolling Stones with each new album….and that is NOT a compliment.

  17. Roger  |   Posted on Jan 31st, 2009 0

Bono is the most arrogant egotistical cocksucker on the planet.
And the flag… more passive aggressive jabs at America? I’ll remember that when they all want to come over here for the next potato famine. Hasn’t he heard this is ObamaNation now? Bono is a fucking ingrate.

    • quilly  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

jesus, potato famine, you’re an inspiration aren’t you. get your head out of the 19th century please, and also dont forget the irish were treated like dirt in america, they made it all by their lonesome.

  18. bibble  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

shouldnt it be “PUT on your boots”?

  19. Hulululu  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

It sounds like “going with the flow” by Queens of the stone Age.

    Damn copy/pasta!

  20. U2 < Anything but U2.

  21. Tractor Beam Van Gogh  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

I mean back in the day “Achtung Baby” sounded like National Geographic(the ellaborate photo book and fancy painting on the cd helped for that effect)The fact is I rather chose to hate them until “the fly”…Juana Molina is VERY good by the way…as is the new ac.,,Bono’s a lot like Jagger in terms of taking “calculated” risks…”the great super bowl commercial” is dead for the time being…yippee? yippee!

  22. worthless song.

  23. Mr. A  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

Anyone else think the verse sounds like Bono’s singing Costello’s “Pump it up”?

  24. Robert  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

Don’t complicate this video too much. It’s a green screen.

  25. Terry's Chocolate Orange  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

“satan loves a bombscare but he won’t scare you” ? did i hear that right ?

  26. evan  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

First time I’ve heard this song. At least its semi-interesting. Better than any of those shitty singles from their last couple records.

  27. Dan  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

its just a song, its just a video, its just a little message (maybe) no need to pour all your hatred for your dad in each posting comment guys. bono’s a bit of a dick but there are so many bigger dicks.

  28. Kelli  |   Posted on Feb 1st, 2009 0

This video is so terrible that the background images still have the “getty images” watermarks on them. Bad form.

  29. This video reminds me of a much less funny version of Michael Jackson’s “Leave Me Alone”.

  30. miguel  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2009 0

lol, sloppppy – someone didn’t catch the getty images watermarks on some of the pictures???? wow… it’s pretty obvious.

    • Teddy  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2009 0

It’s a bootleg, doofus. That’s why aspect ratio is wrong and there’s watermarks. Video hasn’t been officially released yet.

  31. preston  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2009 0

    that was awful

  32. Richard   |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2009 0

None of you guys could even write a song much less have a band that could last at least a decade. All of you are nobodies and will never be anything in life. Your only muse is to talk shit on the internet. None of you have the balls to back your shit up in real life so you feel like you have balls talking shit on the net. All of you guys work jobs you hate you never had any dreams to be someone beyond your means. All of you will wilt away having never accomplished anything in your little lives. U2 have conquered the 80s, the 90s and now the millennium. They are worth every grammy they have ever achieved. Think about how ugly you guys really are. Maybe you should take a look in the mirror and ask yourself who the real dick is. LOL. U2 is still the Biggest and Best Band in the world.

    • Actually Dick, I love my job. It is exactly what I wanted to do with my life. And I’m sorry if the reason for you pathetic existence (U2) is not loved by all. Personally, they have never really done anything for me and usually when a U2 song plays on the radio I change it. They are just flat out boring. Sorry. Take your meds.

      • dwan  |   Posted on Feb 9th, 2009 0

“Actually Dick, I love my job.” Yeah, you enjoy your job being a Dick, you ass rimmer. U2 is a great band. So, go FUCK OFF and pull that corn cob out of your flabby ass.

  33. Bless their little irish socks, even if they’ve got nothing, they keep trying. Go easy on the old fellas..

  34. This looks like the intro to a Bond movie…

  35. DDD  |   Posted on Feb 2nd, 2009 0

looks like oasis’ shock of the lightning vid

  36. “It’s based around the idea that men have fucked things up so badly, politically, economically and socially that it’s really time we handed things over to women.” The Edge obviously hasn’t read Y: The Last Man.

    • Yeah, because women are so straightforward with everything they mean, *never* try to deceive anyone, or twist logic to justify *anything*!

That logic is just another form of subtle sexism. “Women are weak, so no one would fight if they were in charge!”

      • TD  |   Posted on Feb 3rd, 2009 0

Or that women simply aren’t inclined toward physical aggression and use other ways to fight.
I always thought that a world run by women might have many cold wars but significantly less bloodshed. Countries would talk about each other behind their backs and just avoid confrontation altogether.

  37. bill ofoghlada  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2009 0

get a life! only came on here to watch a new video, if you lot were ice cream you would lick yourselves LOL!!

  38. Wanna start a riot? Do a post about U2! This is entertaining. You should post about them more often.

  39. Njoy  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2009 0

    barf all over these comments

  40. Ha, then I go and watch the video and get “This video has been removed by the user”. What the hell is Universal’s problem with embedded videos? As a record label, wouldn’t you want this video posted all over the friggin’ internet? Wouldn’t you want this spread wider than Paris Hilton? Just a thought Universal. It is 2009. You should get into viral marketing. It works.

  41. ferret  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2009 0

i like how they act like they’re enjoying themselves. so cute.

  42. Sounds like a pussified ripoff of QOTSA. Whatever, U2 was cool when they were all new wave-y. In the 25 years since that time? …not so much.

  43. coryhightech  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2009 0

New U2 is so bad I am beginning to dislike old U2.

  44. Walter  |   Posted on Feb 7th, 2009 0

I really believe U2 deserve a little more respect in this modern landscape. Yes, there last album was hideous but as a journalist, and as someone who has heard the album, I can say it really is quite a moving, cohesive album. This song is the weakest on the album but comes at a point where the album needs a lighter tone.

I honestly feel a lot of you will be surprised when hearing the album. There are no weak, middle of the road moments and it reminds me very much of the transition between Rattle & Hum and Achtung Baby.

Anyway, thats my two Bob. I know Bono can be a bit of a tool but it’s refreshing to still have an international band that can fill out a stadium anywhere. Plus, a band that cna release such a quality, innovative album at this stage in their careers. Give the album a spin, you’ll end up buying it.

  45. Rick Rueben  |   Posted on Feb 7th, 2009 0

the chorus sounds like something out of the Queens of the Stone Age songbook … or this too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq0XZx_a7Y8

  46. jjazznola  |   Posted on Feb 7th, 2009 0

Blah, blah , blah – The new record will sell millions, win awards and the world tour will sellout every show with or without the idiots on this site! The new record will go down as one of their best. Boots may be the weakest song on it. The tour, like all the other U2 tours (I seen every US tour) will be awesome. To the haters, go listen to your boring, whimpy indie crap bands that couldn’t even open for the U2′s, Radioheads and Springsteens of the world. Superstars are superstars for a reason.

  47. Toby  |   Posted on Feb 8th, 2009 0

All this discussion about who sounds like who, who ripped off who, get a life folks. You sounds like adolescents, the lot of you. All musicians borrow…. there’s nothing new under the, and Saint Yorke is no more innocent than God Bono. Jesus (and no, that’s not the Edge).

  48. john  |   Posted on Feb 8th, 2009 0

    U2 are the best!
