The biggest story from this year’s SXSW was that there was no big story from this year’s SXSW. Few bands seemed to catch show hoppers off guard, but we were taken by the pop-noir stylings of The Hylozoists, a multi-instrumental cadre of Canadians who swing from post-rock to classical, sure to please fans of acts like Eluvium and Kronos Quartet. “The Man Who Almost Was” pairs nylon-string guitar arpeggios with weeping strings and glockenspiels, while “Straight Is The Gate” is a page straight from The Album Leaf, less Jimmy’s electronic urges.

The Hot Freaks had ’em play their show in Austin, so love is in the air. NYCers, the band has a free show at Living Room on Saturday at 11PM. That’s a bargain.

La Fin Du Monde is available on Boompa.

I played hockey with Paul Aucoin (head-Hylozoist) when I was a kid in Halifax NS. Not only does he have a great band, but he’s got a great wrist shot.

  2. I sense a little nostalgic hostiiility, Devilisix…
