North Highlands – “Steady Steady” (Stereogum Premiere)

North Highlands have been playing “Steady Steady” live for a while now, so it’s great to hear it in recorded form. The band are recording a full-length album to release next year, but “Steady Steady” is early indication of how their songwriting’s evolved. You’ll still hear the sweet orchestral charm of past tracks like “Sugar Lips” and “Collar Bones” here. But there are new touches, too: disco beats and ghostly harmonies, and the kind of clear, bright guitar tone that Vampire Weekend does so well. It sounds best over the little breakdown, but it also works nicely with the mandolin. There are fewer lyrics and more space too, because these changes need little extra ornamentation.
